When college students were asked about their experiences in childhood, those who remembered their parents frequently being in pain were also those who experienced common pains, like headaches, most frequently as adults. This evidence argues that a person s childhood observations of adults in pain can make that person more susceptible to pain as an adult. Which of the following, if true, most seriously weakens the argument above?
A.Students who most frequently remembered that they were in pain as children were no more likely than the average student to experience common pains very frequently.
B.Parents who were frequently in pain when their children were growing up often experience just as much pain after their children have grown up.
C.College students are in general less susceptible to common pains, like headaches, than are older adults.
D.Adult memories of the circumstances of childhood pain are often vivid, but adults can rarely recall the subjective experience of being in pain as a child.
E.A person"s adult recollections of childhood are likely to emphasize those memories that reflect the person"s adult experiences.

Marriage takes some kind of sacrifice, not dreadful self-sacrifice of the soul, but some level of compromise. Some of one's fantasies, some of one's legitimate desires have to be given up for the value of the marriage itself. Marriage requires sexual, financial and emotional disciplines. A man and a woman cannot follow every impulse, cannot allow himself or herself to stop growing or changing.
A divorce is not an evil act. Sometimes it provides salvation for people who have grown hopelessly apart or frozen in patterns of pains or mutual unhappiness. Divorce can be like the first cut of the surgeon's knife, a step toward new health and a good life. On the other hand, if the partners can stay past the breaking up of the romantic myths into the development of real love and intimacy, they have achieved a work as amazing as the greatest cathedrals of the world. Marriages that do not fail but improve, that persist despite imperfection, are not only rare these days but offer a wondrous shelter in which the face of our mutual humanity can safely show itself.
According to the passage, an ideal marriage life ______.
A.requires considerable sacrifice on both partners
B.requires that the couple be emotionally involved
C.allows for the growth of the husband and wife as a couple and as two individuals
D.is only an illusion in today's society

Even more troubling than the increasing number of inhabitants are the projections of where they will be concentrated. The study by Rafael M. Solos, executive director of the U. N. Fund for Population Activities, notes that by the year 2000:
Nearly 80 percent of all people will live in less developed countries, many hard pressed to support their present populations. That compares with 70 percent today.
In many of these Third World lands metropolises (大城市) will become centers of concentrated urban poverty because of a flood of migration from rural areas.
The bulging(膨胀的) centers mainly in Asia and Latin America, will increasingly become fertile fields for social unrest. More young residents of the urban clusters(一群) will be better educated, unemployed and demanding of a better lifestyle.
To slow the rush to urban centers, countries will have to vastly expand opportunities in the country side, the study suggests. Solos says: "The solution to the urban problem lies as much in the rural areas as in the cities themselves."
Worldwide, the numer of large cities ,will multiply. Now 26 cities have 5 million or more residents each and a combined population of 252 million. By the end of the decade, the number will escalate to 60. with an estimated total of almost 650 million people.
In the last paragraph, the word "escalate" means ______.
A.decrease
B.increase
C.go down
D.decline

Scientists, for several years, have been studying how noise affects people and animals. They are surprised by what they have learned. Peace and quiet are becoming harder to find. Noise pollution is a threat that should be looked at carefully.
There is a saying that it is so noisy that you can't hear yourself think. Doctors who study noise believe that we must sometimes hear ourselves think. If we don't, we may have headaches, other aches and pains, or even worse mental problems.
Noise adds more tension (紧张) to a society that already faces enough stress.
But noise is not a new problem. In ancient Rome, people complained so much about noise that government stopped chariots (四轮马车) from moving through the streets at night!
Ways of making less noise are now being tested. There are even laws controlling noise. We cannot return to the "good old days" of peace and quiet. But we can reduce noise--if we shout loudly enough about it.
Why are scientists surprised by the findings in their noise study?
A.Because the world is becoming more and more noisy.
B.Because they have learned that noise is also a kind of pollution.
C.Because noise is an unwanted waste for human beings.
D.Because people knew little about noise before.
