Chinese leaders believe it is necessary to hold the nation together, to keep it growing, to keep moving toward its destiny. China's economic growth has made it more and more dependent on the outside world for investment, markets, and energy. Computers and the Internet, fax machines and photocopiers, modems and satellites all increase the exposure to people, ideas, and the world beyond China's borders. The effect is only just beginning to be felt. Indeed, greater openness is profoundly in China's own interest. If welcomed, it will speed economic growth, enhance the world influence of China and stabilize society. Without the full freedom to think, question, create, China will be at a distinct disadvantage, competing with fully open societies in the Information Age where the greatest source of national wealth is what resides in the human mind.

Those who gain fame most often gain it as a result of possessing a single talent or skill: singing, dancing, painting, or writing, etc. The successful performer develops a style. that it marketed aggressively and gains some popularity, and it is this popularity that usually convinces the performer to continue performing in the same style, since that is what the public seems to want and to enjoy. But in time, the performer becomes bored singing the same songs in the same way year after year, or the painter becomes bored painting similar scenes or portraits, or the actor is tired of playing the same character repeatedly. The demand of the public holds the artist hostage to his or her own style, success, fame. If the artist attempts to change his or her style. of writing or dancing or singing, etc; the audience may turn away and look to confer fleeting fickle fame on another and then, in time, on another, and so on and so on.

Literature is a means by which we know ourselves. By it we meet 【M1】______
future selves, and recognize past selves; against it we match our present self,
Its primary function is to validate and re-create the self in all its individuality
and distinctness. In doing so, it cements a sense of relationship between the
self and the otherness of the book, and allows us a notion of ourselves as
sociable. Its shared knowledge is vicarious experience; by this means we
enlarge our understandings of what it means to be human, of the corporate 【M2】______
and independent nature of human society. The act of reading the book marks 【M3】______
both our difference in and our place in the human fabric. The more we read,【M4】______
the more we are. In the act of reading silently we are alone from the book,【M5】______
separate from one's own immediate surroundings. Yet in the act of reading 【M6】______
we enter other minds and other places, enlarge our dialogue with the world.【M7】______
Thus paradoxically, while disengaging from the immediate we are increasing
its scope. In silence, reading activates a deeply creative function of consciousness.
We are deeply committed to the narrative which we coexist while 【M8】______
engaged in reading. All kinds of present physical discomfort ness may be 【M9】______
unnoticed while we are reading, and actual time is replaced by narrative time.
To imaginatively enter a fictional world by reading it is then both a liberation【M10】______
from self and an expansion of self.

When President Wilson left Washington, he enjoyed a prestige and a moral influence throughout the world unequalled in history, His bold and measured words carried to the peoples of Europe above and beyond the voices of their own politicians? The enemy peoples trusted him to carry out the compact he had made with them; and the allied peoples acknowledged him not as a victor only but almost as a prophet. In addition to this moral influence, the realities of power were in his hands. The American armies were at the height of their numbers, discipline, and equipment. Europe was in complete dependence on the food supplies of the United States; and financially she was even more absolutely at their mercy. Europe not only already owed the United States more than she could pay; but only a large measure of further assistance could save her from starvation and bankruptcy. Never had a philosopher held such weapons wherewith to bind the princes of this world.

The disturbance of the soul cannot be ended nor true joy created either by the possession of the greatest wealth or by honor and respect in the eyes of the mob or by anything else that is associated with causes of unlimited desires...We must not violate nature, but obey her; and we shall obey her if we fulfill the necessary desires and also the natural, if they bring no harm to us, but sternly reject the harmful... The man who follows nature and not vain opinions is independent in all things. For in reference to what is enough for nature every possession is riches, but in reference to unlimited desires even the greatest wealth is not riches but poverty.
Insofar as you are in difficulties, it is because you forget nature; for you create for yourself unlimited fears and desires. It is better for you to be free of fear lying upon a pallet, than to have a golden couch and a rich table and be fall of trouble.

The pale sun burned away the morning chill and the clinging dampness, revealing a gigantic silent world. Enormous trees with trunks forty, feet in diameter rose two hundred feet overhead, where they spread their dense leafy canopy, blocking out the sky and perpetually dripping water to the ground below. Curtains of gray moss, and the creepers and lianas, hung down in a tangle from the trees; parasitic orchids sprouted from the trunks.
At ground level, huge ferns, gleaming with moisture, grew higher than a man's chest and held the low ground fog. Here and there was a spot of color: the red acanthema blossoms, which were deadly poison, and the blue dicindra vine, which only opened in early morning. But the basic impression was of a vast, oversized, gray-green world an alien place inhospitable to man.
Jan Kruger put aside his rifle and stretched his stiff muscles. Dawn came quickly at the equator; soon it was quite light, although the mist remained.
