Every country with a monetary system of its own has to have some kind of market in which dealers in bills, notes, and other forms of short term credit can buy and sell. The "money market" is a set of institutions or arrangements for handling what might be called wholesale transactions in money and short term credit. The need for such facilities arises in much the same way that a similar need does in connection with the distribution of any of the products of a diversified economy to their final users at the retail level. If the retailer is to provide reasonably adequate service to his customers , he must have active contacts with others who specialize in making or handling bulk quantities of whatever is his stock in trade. The money market is made up of specialized facilities of exactly this kind. It exists for the purpose of improving the ability of the retailers of financial services—commercial banks, savings institutions, investment houses, lending agencies, and even governments—to do their jobs. It has little if any contact with the individuals or firms who maintain accounts with these various retailers or purchase their securities or borrow from them.
The elemental functions of a money market must be performed in any kind of modern economy , even one that is largely planned or socialist, but the arrangements in socialist countries do not ordinarily take the form. of a market. Money markets exist in countries that use market processes rather than planned allocations to distribute most of their primary resources among alternative uses. The general distinguishing feature of a money market is that it relies upon open competition among those who are bulk suppliers of funds at any particular time and among those seeking bulk funds, to work out the best practicable distribution of the existing total volume of such funds.
In their market transactions, those with bulk supplies of funds or demands for them, rely on groups of intermediaries who act as brokers or dealers. The characteristics of these middlemen, the services they perform, and their relationship to other parts of the financial vary widely from country to country. In many countries there is no single meeting place where the middlemen get together, yet in most countries the contacts among all participants are sufficiently open and free to assure each supplier or user of funds that he will get or pay a price that fairly reflects all of the influences (including his own) that are currently affecting the whole supply and the whole demand. In nearly all cases, moreover, the unifying force of competition is reflected at any given moment in a common price (that is, rate of interest) for similar transactions. Continuous fluctuations in the money market rates of interest result from changes in the pressure of available supplies of funds upon the market and in the pull of current demands upon the market.
The first paragraph is mainly about
A.the definition of money market.
B.the constitution of a money market.
C.the basic functions of a money market.
D.the general feature of a money market.

?For each question (15-20), mark one letter (A, B, C or D) on your Answer Sheet.
If you want to buy a property in France, whether it is a permanent house or a holiday apartment, it is important to open a French bank account. Although it is possible to pay on traveller's cheques, Eurocheques and credit cards issued by British banks, the fees for these services can be expensive.
The simplest way to pay regular bills, such as electricity, gas, or telephone, particularly when you are not in residence, is by direct debit from your French account.
To open a current account, you will need to show your passport and birth certificate and to provide your address in your native country. You will be issued with a cheque book within weeks of opening the account. In France it is illegal to be overdrawn. All accounts must be operated in credit. However, there are no bank charges.
Note that cheques take longer to clear in France than in Britain, and can only be stopped if stolen or lost.
The easiest way to transfer money from a British bank to a French one is by bank transfer: simply provide your British bank with the name, address and number of your French bank account. The procedure takes about a week and costs between £25 and £40 for each transaction depending on your British bank.
Alternatively, you can transfer money via a French bank in London. You can also send a sterling cheque (allow at least 12 days for the cheque to be cleared). Eurocheques or traveller's cheques.
Finally, it is a good idea to make friends with your French bank manager. His help can prove invaluable.
If you want to buy a property in France, you can save money by
A.opening a French bank account
B.transferring money from Britain
C.cashing traveller's cheques or Eurocheques
D.using credit cards issued by British banks

Directions: Read the following passage carefully. The passage is followed by some questions or unfinished sentences. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C, and D. Choose the best answer to each question. Questions 1 to 5 are based on the same passag Feeling lonely? Why not go to the mall? You'll find plenty of company, and yes, a new pair of shoes or maybe even a new computer game. It's quick and effortless; and you don't need special equipment. You just get in your car and drive to a store. They're everywhere, and they're open 24 hours in any weather. Most of people think of shopping as something we do when we need to buy things, but some people shop for different reasons. In fact, if shopping is your favorite hobby, something you can easily do to change your mood, you might feel great. However, if you are not careful, the total on your credit card bills will soon be more than you have in your bank account. Because shopping is so enjoyable and convenient, people get into the dangerous habit of spending money to try to feel good. They become trapped in a cycle of self-defeating behavior. that leads to debt and dissatisfaction. How do you know if you are a compulsive spender? There is no easy answer. But ask yourself this: Do you have clothes in your closet that you never wear or that still have the price tags on them? Do you ever hide your purchases from your family? These are some of the warning signs. Most compulsive spenders are unaware of their habits or strongly deny them. Compulsive spenders prefer to avoid the issues that force them to shop, so the problem is not just that they spend more than they earn. Spending problems may result from deep personal problems that compulsive spenders have. Some spontaneous spending is natural: flowers to brighten a rainy day, or a treat for a job well done. To be spontaneous means to act without planning. However, a compulsive spender will shop in response to stress and follow a real physical urge to go out and spend money. When this type of spending causes serious problems for you and your family, you have a compulsive spending problem. Question 11 is based on the above passage. According to the passage, people usually go shopping ________.
A、when they want to hang out with friends
B、when they feel lonely and bored
C、when they need to buy things
D、when they want the pleasure of spending money

Raymond A. Moody, Jr. , a Georgia physician, credits his sense of humor for getting him through the terrible grind of medical school. Yet not once, in all those years of training, did professor Moody bring up the health benefits of laughter?
"As time went on," Moody relates in his book Laugh After Laugh: The Healing Power of Humor, "I came to feel that a human being' s ability to laugh is just as valid an indicator of his health as are all those other things that doctors check."
Gradually, many members of the medical establishment are coming around to the same thinking. Dr. William Fry,Jr. , a Stanford University researcher, has studied the beneficial effects of laughter for more than 30 years. "When we laugh," Fry explains, "muscles are activated. When we stop laughing, these muscles relax. Since muscle tension magnifies pain, many people with arthritis, rheumatism and other painful conditions benefit greatly from a healthy dose of laughter. Many headache sufferers feel the same relief."
How can we all get more laughter into our lives? Here' s what the experts prescribe:
Mix with people who laugh. Nancy Alguire, a teacher in Clifton Park, N.Y. was once painfully shy and had a hard time laughing. Then she married a circus enthusiast. "I became intrigued with the clowns," she recalls. "One day I put on a costume and asked a clown to paint my face. That afternoon my whole life changed. I learned to laugh and enjoy life in a way I had never done before."
She went on to teach clowning at a local community college. To this day, she says, "I still make a point of mixing with people who enjoy life and laughing--because their joy rubs off on those around them."
To help get humor-minded people together, several "laughter clubs" have sprung up around the country. Virginia Tooper, who publishes a newsletter called "Laugh Lovers News," tells of four typical women who gather for a restaurant lunch every Thursday in Phoenix. Each comes armed with at least one funny experience from the week, and the storyteller who receives the biggest laugh gets a free lunch-paid for by the others.
Which is the best title for this text?
A.Get Humor-minded People Together.
B.Laugh Lovers News.
C.Take Time To Laugh.
D.Mix With People Who Laugh.
