听力原文: La Fenice, Venice's historic opera house which was destroyed by fire eight years ago, has reopened with a gala performance of Giuseppe Verdi's opera "La Travolta". The first performance of "Travolta" took place in the same theatre one hundred and fifty one years ago.

It's taken eight years to rebuild Venice's opera house, the interior of which was completely destroyed while La Fenice was closed for repairs in a blaze which raged all night at end of January 1996. A court later sentenced two electricians to prison on charges of arson. A glittering gathering of celebrities and politicians at- tended the first opera performance in the reconstructed theatre.

The opera house was handed over by the builders nearly a year ago, but it's taken many months to install new stage machinery and to ac0ust the acoustics. Every detail of the original eighteenth-century building has been faithfully reproduced and state-of-the-art sprinkler fire protection and an underground freshwater reservoir

have been installed to stave off any future disaster.

A seat in the stalls or in one of the elaborate boxes surrounding the horseshoe-shaped auditorium now costs nearly & 700. In the fall 2006, the National Basketball Association (NBA) started using basketballs made with synthetic, or manmade material instead of leather. They made the switch because they wanted every basketball they use to feel and bounce the same.

However, some players complained right away that the new balls bounced differently and were actually harder to control than leather ones. Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban asked for help the Department of Physics at the University of Texas. The scientists investigated friction that affects the ability of a player to hold onto a ball. "The greater the friction, the better it will stick to his hand", explains Horwitz, one of the physicists who worked on the project.

Tests on both wet and dry balls showed that while the plastic ball was easier to grip when dry, it had less friction and became much harder to hold onto when wet. That's because sweating stays on the surface of the synthetic balls but gets absorbed into the leather balls—an important detail for sweaty athletes.

In January, the NBA went back to use the traditional leather balls. They aren't perfect, but for now, that's just the way the ball bounces.

The NBA started using synthetic basketballs instead of leather ones because ______.

A.NBA players had used the leather balls for too long a time

B.NBA officials wanted a switch with which to start a reform

C.they emphasized that synthetic materials are manmade

D.they wanted every basketball to feel and bounce the same

听力原文: Officials in the former Soviet Republic of Azerbaijan now fear more than 300 people were killed Saturday in a huge subway fire. Peter Collins has de tails in Moscow. "The fire broke out Saturday evening in an underground railway train as it was moving between two subway stations in central Baku. Reports say an electrical fault, perhaps a high voltage spark or a motor catching fire, set the train ablaze. It stopped trapping hundreds of passengers underground in thick smoke. Most victims apparently died of carbon monoxide poisoning. Eye witnesses say there was panic as the tunnel began to fill with smoke. Passengers broke windows in their attempts to get out. Rescue workers who struggled throughout the night to pull out bodies of the dead said the smoke was so thick at first that they were unable to get to the train. Azeri President Gaidar Aliev has set up a special commission to investigate the fire. It has yet to announce its findings but President Alley suggested on television that a technical fault was to blame. Some 20 people have died and dozens have been injured in two bomb attacks in the Baku subway system over the past 18 months."

A.an electrical fault

B.a high voltage spark

C.more than 30 people were killed Sunday

D.more than 300 people were killed Saturday

In short, we talk about everything but money itself. In daily life, money is still a major conversational taboo. This is a shame, because money is as interesting as the things it does and buys, and the more you know about it, the more interesting it is.

听力原文: The most common type of child abuse you know is beating with the hands or with an instrument usually a cane in some places. Nearly a third of the abused children we see are in the age group between six and ten, and about sixty-five percent of them are boys. This is the age group when children are first to expect to study hard and parents have great expectations of their progresses in school.

Boys of course attract more abuse such as beating because once again parental expectations are high, and boys tend to be more energetic and difficult to control than girls. Most experts seem to agree that the child abuse is caused by a combination of social and psychological factors. Families who beat their children are not particularly different from other people.

The only difference that exists between them is that they lack skills in the establishing good relationships with their children. These families too, generally speaking, have other problems such as marriage problems or financial problems. Some parents are hurting their children because they strongly believe in the use of traditional discipline methods. But many of them have emotional problems. They are often the victims of violence themselves. Sometimes they even bear an unreasonable hatred for a child because they believe that the child has brought the thmily bad luck.

According to the passage, when are children first expected to study hard?

A.Before 6 years of age.

B.Between 6 and 10.

C.After l0 years of age.

D.After 12 years of age.
