听力原文: Why are college students so prone to sleep deprivation? The problem often begins during the teen years. Most high school kids admit that they are often sleepy and 15 percent admit that they fall asleep in class.

Lack of sleep causes many problems, not the least of which is the difficulty it adds to learning. It's also detrimental to the immune system and motor skills. Students (and everyone else) need at least eight hours of sleep to maintain optimum health and learning capabilities. Yet, with the pressure of school, family and social life, few students are sleeping near the required amount.

College life only escalates the problem. Added to the above activities are more hours needed for studies. Some students also hold down a part time job to help defray college expenses. Some students are married and trying to support a family. Because of all these pressures there is also an increase in stress. Stress can lead to insomnia and even more lost sleep.

With the approach of finals, the problem can only grow worse. Students force themselves to stay awake to study. It's called cramming for exams, and it can eat away at sleep hours already far too meager. Too many nights of forced wakefulness can eventually lead to a ease of full-blown insomnia and other sleep abnormalities.

(36)

A.eating disorders, low immunity and poor motor skills.

B.difficulty concentrating, poor motor skills, divorce.

C.low immunity, poor self esteem, eating disorders.

D.poor motor skills, difficulty concentrating, low immunity.

Why are so many people so afraid of failure? Quite simply because no one tells us how to fail so that failure becomes an experience that will lead to growth. We forget that failure is part of the human condition and that every person has the right to fail.

Most parents work hard at either preventing failure or protecting their children from the knowledge that they have failed. One way is to lower standards. A mother describes her child’s hastily making table as ―Perfect! even though it couldn’t stand on uneven legs. Another way is to shift blame. If John fails science, his teacher is unfair or stupid.

The trouble with failure-prevention methods is that they leave a child unequipped for life in the real world. The young need to learn that no one can be best at everything, no one can win all the time —and that it’s possible to enjoy a game even when you don’t win. A child who’s not invited to a birthday party, who doesn’t make the honor roll or the baseball team, feels terrible, of course. But parents should not offer a quick comfort prize or say, ―It doesn’t matter because it does. The young should be allowed to experience disappointment —and be helped to master it.

Failure is never pleasurable. It hurts grown-ups and children alike. But it can make a positive contribution to your life once you can learn to use it. Step one is to ask ―Why did I fail? Control the natural impulse to blame someone else. Ask yourself what you did wrong, how you can improve. Second, is the goal you’re to reach the right one? Think about this question. ―If you dosucceed in this, where will it get me? This may help you prevent failure in things you shouldn’t be doing anyhow. The third thing to keep in mind about failure is that it’s part of life. Learn to ―live with yourself even though you may have failed. Remember, ―You can’t win themall.

D、If a child fails a subject, he should blame his teacher.

(3) According to the writer, ().

A、parents should tell their children to think nothing of not being chosen into a baseball team

B、children should be encouraged to get rid of disappointment all by themselves

C、parents should judge what their children have done as it is

D、children should learn to enjoy a game that they won’t win

(4) The last paragraph tells us ().

A、there are three methods to deal with failure

B、there are some methods to deal with failure

C、failure is not enjoyable

听力原文:F:These days more and more people are employed in multinational companies which require higher awareness of cultural diversity.ABD is a multinational car manufacturer that has been very successful in dealing with cross-cultural problems.Steve Denison,an internal business consultant,is in the studio today.Steve, could you explain why your company has been such a success in that field?

M:Well, with the increased globalization of the economy and interaction of different cultures, the future of any organization depends on whether the employees can accept the differences and learn from each other. But we do have our‘secret weapon’.

F:Interesting!What is it then?

M:Our secret weapon is‘glocalization’.

F:‘GIobalization’you mean?

M:No,GLOCALIZATIONO The conflict between globalization and localization has led to the invention of this concept‘glocalization’.You know, companies that want to be successful in foreign markets have to be aware of the local cultural characteristics that affect the way business is done.

F:I see.So could you give us some examples about those local cultural characteristics?

M:Sure.Take Latin and Asian cultures for example.Their status is not based on analysis or systems, but is automatically accorded to the boss, who is more likely to be in his fifties or sixties than in his thirties. This is particularly true in Japan, where companies traditionally have a policy of promotion by seniority.A 50-year-old Japanese manager,or a Greek or Italian one, would quite simply be offended by having to report to an aggressive,well-educated,but inexperienced American or German 20 years his junior.

F:OK,What about the performance evaluation then?Would that be different as well?

M:Sure.I'll use the salespeople to illustrate the difference. In countries like USA or Britain, the principle of pay-for-performance often successfully motivates them. The more you sell.the more you get paid. But the principle might well be resisted in countries where rewards and promotion are expected to come with age and experience. There was an example of a sales rep in an Italian subsidiary of a US multinational company who was given a huge quarterly bonus under a new policy imposed by head office. His sales—which had been high for years—declined dramatically during the following three months. It was later discovered that he was deliberately trying not to sell more than any of his colleagues,so as not to reveal their inadequacies. He was also desperate not to earn more than his boss, which he thought would be an unthinkable humiliation that would force the boss to resign immediately.

F:What about the differences in management structures?

M:Yes,I was just about to come to that.Another example of an American idea that doesn't work well in Latin countries is matrix management. The task-oriented logic of matrix management conflicts with the principle of loyalty to the all-important line supewisor, you know, the functional boss. And without the awareness and understanding of the other culture, each would think of the other as being ‘corrupt’。

F:So how do we tackle these misunderstandings? Are there any strategies to be applied?

M:OK.Experience and knowledge will surely help us accommodate to another culture, but some key strategies may quicken the process. To begin with, the understanding and acceptance of differences;and that is followed by developing culture sensitivity and shared decision-making.Then organizational resources should be distributed equally. And er…

F:Wow,that's already a whole lot of strategies.And there's more?

M:Yes.And er,yes, flexible institutional policies, practices, and procedures should be applied.

F:OK.So what kind of training programs or proposals would you offer your company, you know,to get all these ideas to really sink in?

M:well, there are many different types of cross-cultural training to make sure that we can all get along in the work place, like conflict resolution;conducting cultur

A.recognizing the increasing impacts of globalization.

B.operating all over the world while taking account of local cultural diversities.

Bike trailers are now becoming a popular mode of transportation. If you are wondering what a bike trailer is, it is a motorless wheeled frame. attached to your bicycle. Its primary function is to help the bike rider in carrying additional load.Instead of carrying the load on the bike, it can now be carried on the bike trailer which greatly reduces the strain placed on the bike. It is convenient, easy to use and it helps you live an active lifestyle.

Bike trailers are an alternative to carrying different sorts of loads. Instead of using your car to go to the nearby grocery store perhaps, why not use your bike trailer? It not only saves you money from the gas which should have been spent by your car, it also does the job of carrying your groceries.

Planning to get a bike trailer? Make sure to decide on what you are going to use it for first. Different bike trailers are made for different uses. There are a variety of bike trailers being commercially manufactured. The general trailers available in the market today are the general cargo trailer which is used to carry different sorts of loads from groceries to furniture, child passenger trailer which is used to carry a child, pet trailer which is used to carry cats or dogs, and canoe trailers which are used to carry long and narrow loads like canoes and surfboards.

If you want a trailer to carry cargo all around, then a cargo trailer would definitely suit your needs. If you want to take your child along with you while you ride your bike, then check out the different child trailers available in the market.

There are two types of bike trailers in the market today based on the number of wheels. The first is the single wheel trailer which can carry light to medium loads. It is popular among hikers since it is great for trail riding and narrow surfaces. It is also stable when making sharp turns at high speeds. The other type of trailer is the two-wheel trailer which obviously has two wheels. It can carry heavier loads than the single wheel type. When making sharp turns at high speeds it may roll over, so be sure to slow down before making the turns.

Caring for your bike trailer is easy and comparable to that of a bike. Cleaning the trailer requires water, soap and wax. Regularly check the tires for abnormalities like low air pressure or wear and tear for this may cause accidents.

When you are out riding in your bike trailer, keep in mind that it is different from riding a bike. The responses are different. You may notice that your bike may be a bit unresponsive due to the extra load.Be sure to take trial runs in non-busy roads to get you acquainted with the new riding conditions.

Riding at night is more dangerous than riding during the daytime. Make sure that you have a front light and a rear light and that both are switched on. Be sure also to have front, back and side reflectors so that you would always be visible to traffic.
