Valentine's Day is on 14, February each year. It is a day for lovers, and one of the loveliest holidays in the United States. At present, it is quite popular all over the world.
The origin of the Valentine's Day is not well known for most of people. Even very few Americans know the story of Valentine's Day. However, there are a lot of stories about it. One English story tells that birds select their mates on February 14. Another story says that more than 2, 000 yearn ago the ancient Romans celebrated a holiday for lovers. As part of the celebration, girls wrote their names on pieces of paper and put them in a large container. Boys reached their hands into the container and pulled one out. The girl whose name was written on the paper became his lover or sweet heart for a year. Then came a Roman priest Valentine, who secretly married many young lovers against the Roman king's order. At that time, the Roman Emperor wanted all the young men to fight for him. So he made the law that didn't permit young men to get married. As a priest, Valentine helped young people by giving wedding ceremony for them. The Roman Emperor got angry and ordered the killing of Valentine on February 14, 269 A.D. This story is generally considered to be the most impossible, for the priest's name Valentine.
It is very popular to send cards decorated with hearts and flowers to express love. Today many Americans like to exchange humorous cards with husbands, wives, mothers, fathers, sons, daughters, relatives, and even special friends. Some enjoy the joke of sending "Guess Who" cards to a person he or she secretly admires. Sometimes they put their love message in a heart-shaped box of chocolates, or a bunch of flowers tied with red ribbons (丝带). Candy, perfume, jewelry or a picture with a heart and Cupid (the Roman God of love) armed with bow and arrow are also sent to express love. Many couples arrange romantic dinners by candle light for this occasion. Universities also hold a Sweethearts’ Ball for the young students to celebrate the Valentine's Day.
