can take the bus to work, or the subway, or the taxi. And there is so much more to do. M: I know what you mean. Id like to live in the city, but to live in the suburbs is better for children. W:Well, there are a lot of good things about suburban living. But, as a working woman, I think a city has all the conveniences, including the best food and fastest news. M: But there are more trees, grass and fresh air in the suburbs. W:Yeah, but living in a city, its convenient to go everywhere. There are lots of movie houses, theatres and so on. You can take them to the suburbs on weekends. M: Yeah, my children are at the right age. There are lots of things for them here. W: You are right. They are at the library in Brooklyn. And they come back home for lunch, then go uptown to the Museum of Natural History. There is so much for young people to see and do. M: Not just for young people. What about me? 听力原文:S Excuse me. Professor Miller. Can I talk to you for a few minutes? I need to ask
you about my classes. A Hello, Lisa. I know its a bit late, but Merry Christmas. Are you having problems with any of your classes? I know that you are taking a full course load this term. It must be tough to keep up with all the readings and assignments. S It is tough. I dont think Ive had a full nights sleep in a month. But Im not here about that. I was wondering if you could help me choose a second major. Most of the students getting business degrees have them, so I think I should get one, too. A I see. Well, I should start by telling you that just because other people are doing something does not mean that you should. I hope youre not thinking about a double major just because of your classmates. S Actually, theres more than one reason I want a double major, but keeping up with my classmates is important to me. Once we graduate, well be applying for the same jobs, so Im worried that their resumes will look better than mine. A lot of them are getting second majors in math or advertising. A Thats right. Im glad to see youre thinking ahead. I guess the question now is which second major will look the best to future employers. Any ideas? S I am contemplating adding a language major, but Im unsure which one to choose. Its a tossup between Spanish and Japanese. A You already speak Spanish fluently, dont you? Why would you bother taking classes in a language you already know? Sort of a waste of time, isnt it? S It depends on how you look at it. I know that I could pass the Spanish classes with flying colors, which would help my overall grade point average. Basically, I could improve my marks, have a double major on my degree, and, most importantly, not have to worry too much about killing myself with extra work. A That does make a lot of sense, now that youve explained it. But, arent you in university to learn more, not just collect grades? You said you might want to study Japanese. Tell me why? S Speaking Japanese would really help me in the business world. I know it would give me an edge in finding a job and getting promoted. But, Im already in my second year of school, which does not leave a lot of time to really master another language before I graduate. A Right. At best, you could expect to spend a lot of time studying, but youd only be a low intermediate speaker. Youd never learn enough to really do business in Japanese. S So you think I should take the Spanish classes? I guess youre right. Besides, there are many countries that use Spanish, but only one that uses Japanese. Well, at any rate, I dont have to make up my mind for another week. Ill give it more thought. A Come back and we can talk more if you want. Im always here for the students. A Thats right. Im glad to see youre thinking ahead. I guess the question now is which second major will look the best to future employers. Any ideas? S I am contemplating adding a language major, but Im unsure which one to choose. Its a toss up between Spanish and Japanese, What does the student mean when she says this: S Its a tossup between Spanish and Japanese. In this part of the section, you will hear 1 conversation and 2 lectures. Not only are non-English-speaking students in English-only schools unable to understand the information they are supposed to be learning, but also they are subject to frequent embarrassment and teasing from their classmates. Without the use of Spanish, unable to communicate with the teacher or students, for six weeks we guessed at everything we did. When we lined up to go anywhere, neither my sister nor I knew what to expect. Once, the teacher took the class on a bathroom break, and I mistakenly thought we were on our way to the cafeteria for lunch. Before we left, I grabbed our lunch money, and one of the girls in line began sneering and pointing. Somehow she figured out my mistake before I did. When I realized why she was laughing, I became embarrassed and threw the money into my sister’s desk as we walked out the classroom.

听力原文:M: So, what do you want to do tomorrow?

W: Well, let's look at this city guide here. Uh, here's something interesting. Oh! Why don't we first visit the art museum in the morning.

M: Okay. I like that idea. And where do you want to eat lunch?

W: How about going to an Indian restaurant? Humm. The guide recommends one downtown a few blocks from the museum.

M: Now that sounds great. After that, what do you think about visiting the zoo? Umm, well, it says here that there are some very unique animals not found anywhere else.

W: Well, to tell the truth, I'm not really interested in going there. Why don't we go shopping instead? There are supposed to be some really nice places to pick up souvenirs.

M: Oh, no. I remember the last time you used my credit card for your purchases.

听力原文: The other day, we thought we would go and have a look at tile London Museum. So we got on fifty-two bus in the station yard at Victoria, and started off. We had a lovely view from the top of the bus, and saw the horse guards just as they were passing Hyped Park Corner. The girls had never come this way before, and they would have liked to explore the shops, if only there had been more time. But we had to hurry, and even then when we did get to the Museum, it was almost closing time. On the way back, John got so excited over the model boats on the Round Pond that he nearly fell in. At last he managed to drag himself away, and the girls said. "Could we go back by under ground?" there was no difficulty about catching an Inner Circle train at Kensington High Street, but we had no sooner got in than we found ourselves going in the wrong direction. Of course ,John wanted to stay in the train and go home the long way round, but I put my foot down and wouldn't hear of it. In the end we got out at Baker Street, and I had to console the children by taking them to waxworks.

Where did they plan to go the other day?

A.The London Museum.

B.Victoria.

C.Hyped Park Comer.

D.Kensington High Street.
