A new study uses advanced brain-scanning technology to

gists have puzzled over more than half a century:
social conformity. The study was based on a 【M2】_____
famous series of laboratory experiment from
the 1950's by a social psychologist, Dr. Solomon 【M3】_____

something that most 5-year-olds could answer cor- 【M5】_____
rectly. But Dr. Asch added a twist. Seven other people, in cahoots with the researchers, also exam-
ined the lines and gave their answers before the subjects did. And sometimes these confederates
unconsciously gave the wrong answer.
Dr. Asch was astonished at what happened next. After think- 【M6】_____
ing hard, three out of four subjects agreed with
the incorrect answers given by the confederates at 【M7】_____
least once. And one in four conformed 50 percent of the time. Dr. Asch, who died in 1996, always
wondered about the findings. Did the people who gave in to group do so knowing that their answers was right? Or did the social pressure actually change their perceptions?
The researchers found that 【M8】_____
social conformity showed up in the brain like activity in
regions-that are entirely devoted to percep- 【M9】_____
tion. But independence of judgment--standing up for one's beliefs--showed up as activity in brain
areas involved in emotion, the study found,
suggesting that there be a cost for going against the 【M10】_____
group.

Few people would defend the Victorian attitude
of children, but if you were a parent in those days,【M1】______
at least you know where you stood; children were to【M2】______
be seen and not heard. Freud and company did away
with all that and parents have been bewildered ever
since. The child's happiness is all-important, the
psychologists say, but what about the parents' happiness
Parents suffer constantly with fear and guilt 【M3】______
while their children gaily romp about pull the place【M4】______
apart. A good old-fashion spanking is out of the 【M5】______
question; no modern child-rearing manual would
permit such barbarity. The trouble is you are not al
lowed even to shout at. Who knows what deep 【M6】______
psychological wounds you might inflict? The poor child
may recover from the dreadful traumatic experience.
So it is that parents bend over backwards to avoid
to give their children complexes which a hundred 【M7】______
years ago hadn't even been heard of. Certainly a
child needs love, and a lot of it. But the excessive
permissiveness of modern parents is surely doing
more harm than good. Psychologists have succeeded
in undermining parents' confidence in their own au
thority. And it has taken children long to get wind of【M8】______
the fact. There are countless articles in magazines
and newspapers. With so much unsolicited advice
fly about, parents do nothing at all. And the children【M9】______
take complete control. What else can the poor
parents do but obey? But the psychologists have
much to answer. They should keep their mouths shut【M10】______
and let the parents get on with the job. This will at
least belp the children to develop vigorous views of
their own and give them something positive to react
against.
