Passage Two What children need even more than presents this holiday season (节选自《华盛顿邮报》) I had barely closed the door behind the last trick-or-treater when the first signs of the holiday season began to appear. My inbox is cluttered with emails shouting helpful suggestions for purchasing, decorating and hosting. Our mailbox is ____16______ with catalogues. Holiday music ____17______my mall browsing and I spy Santas surrounded by twinkling lights and flashy garlands waiting for visitors to trickle in. The holidays are upon us, and parents often feel enormous pressure to “get it right.” We want our kids to be happy, and sometimes we feel like we must be ultra-organized, forward thinking and creative to make that happen. Many parents have fond memories of the holiday season from their childhoods. I ____18______remember time spent with family. The frantic and rushed pace of regular life would slow down, giving us time to complete 1,000-piece puzzles and play board games while snacking on tasty treats. Other memories include cozy feelings and idyllic scenes, perhaps fabricated through books and song lyrics, as I almost certainly never experienced a sleigh ride, a white Christmas or chestnuts roasting on an open fire. ____19______holiday cheer from Thanksgiving until the New Year can be difficult. Despite the joy and delight we think we should be feeling, parents in reality often feel exhausted, stressed and short-tempered. Children can go from euphoria to complete meltdowns in as little as 60 seconds. Families fly from one activity to the next while parents fret over the need to buy ideal gifts. In the rush to create picture-perfect holiday memories, we often fall into the trap of creating giant to-do lists, impossible to successfully complete. And in that shuffle, the really important things — such as time together, traditions and goodwill — get ____20______. A. accompanies B. specifically C. lost D. stuffed E. sustaining 注意:请在答题处填入相应的字母编号!字母一定要大写!

听力原文: Amsterdam, the Netherland's capital, is one of the world's best tourist destinations, where you can immerse yourself in history, in art, in the head of a beer.
Any time can be the best time to visit. The summer months are wonderful as the whole city seems to live outdoors, but it's also the peak tourist season, when hotels are full and expensive. From mid-October to mid-March the climate is miserable, but there are fewer tourists, things are cheaper and cultural life is at its most authentic. The shoulder seasons can offer the best of both worlds.
Many of the world's airlines fly directly to Amsterdam, and it is extremely convenient to fly to Amsterdam from China. But it might be cheaper for you to fly to a nearby city such as London and get to Amsterdam by bus or train. Many airlines will offer you a free side trip within Europe, so ask around and see what offers are available.
Amsterdam is well connected to the rest of Europe, including Britain, by long-distance bus. Buses are consistently cheaper than trains, but on some services you'll get a lungful of cigarette smoke. Freeways link Amsterdam to The Hague, Rotterdam. The Netherlands are very amenable to cycling —this is one of the flattest places in the world, and there are dedicated bike paths throughout the country. Amsterdam has 550,000 bicycles and this is an ideal way to get around, although you need to get used to the idea of having your bike stolen. If you're going to be around for more than a month, consider buying a second-hand bike, and make sure you buy a lock as well.
(30)
A.The whole city becomes noisy.
B.It's hard to find a cheap or vacant hotel room.
C.It is too hot then.
D.The crime rate increases.

Road Trip Vacations
It's summer. In the United States, it's the season of swimming pools, barbeques, camping and road trips.
Road trip vacations where the car journey is part of the fun are especially popular with college students, who like to explore the country on wheels. These budget trips are ideal for students who often have plenty of free time but little money.
"Ever since I went to college, I've been traveling around a lot, exploring the country," said Austin Hawkins, a 19-year-old college student from New York. This summer, Hawkins and his friends have spent weekends traveling in New England.
The best part about car trips, said Hawkins, is that you can be spontaneous (自发的). "On a road trip, if you get interested in things you see along the way you can stop and explore. "
Matt Roberts, a 20-year-old student from Ohio who drove to Montreal, Canada, agrees. "With road trips you don't have to plan in advance, you can just get into a car and drive."
Even with high gas prices, driving with friends is cheaper than flying. Roberts paid about 40 dollars for gas, but a round trip plane ticket would have cost nearly 400 dollars.
Driving trips first became popular in the 1920s. Newly paved roads and improved cars made it possible to travel longer distances. Motels started appearing outside cities.
By the 1950s, car ownership became the norm. Construction of the US interstate highway system began in 1956 and motel and restaurant chains popped up everywhere making long distance trips easier.
Today, the US has the highest car ownership rate in the world. Only 8 percent of American homes have no car, according to the most recent US census.
Though many college students don't own a car, most have access to one. On many of Hawkins' trips, they used a borrowed van.
Hawkins' most memorable road trip took place over spring break. He and two friends drove from New York to New Orleans to volunteer, helping rebuild the city after Hurricane Katrina hit it last July. They crossed the country in two days and slept in their car in church parking lots.
Roberts' road trip to Canada last winter was even more eventful. Upon arriving in Montreal, they were lost in a blizzard and shivering in the — 250 cold. To find their hotel, they turned on a laptop and drove around in circles until they found a spot with wireless Internet coverage.
"I know we should have planned better, but we're young. Now, when I see those guys I always say. 'Remember when we were lost in the snow storm!' I'll never forget that."
The word "blizzard" in paragraph 12 can be replaced by
A.snowstorm.
B.hurricane.
C.mist.
D.fog.

As a source of power, water is virtually inexhaustible. Its power is ultimately derived from the force of gravity and from the sun. It is the sun's energy that warms the sea and the land and causes water to evaporate into the air; later the moisture in the air condenses and falls in the form. of rain or snow. Much of the water that falls on the land flows back to the sea. The downward flow of the water exerts considerable pressure, and it is at this point in the water cycle that we can capture some of its power.
The earliest method of exploiting this power was to make water turn a wheel. This system in which the force of water was used directly, had one great disadvantage. Factories which used it had to be built on the banks of fast flowing streams, but these were often located in inaccessible, thinly populated areas, which made transportation of goods difficult.
When the steam engine was invented, it soon replaced flowing water as a source of power, new factories sprang up in the coal fields. Coal and oil—reserve of power also ultimately derived from the sun—are not always found in accessible places, but they have the advantage of being portable.
In the 20th century the situation changed and water once more became a vital source of power. Methods were devised for producing electricity from the energy of rivers. Once the initial capital has been recovered, electricity from this source is usually cheaper than oil and coal, which are expensive to extract and transport. The great advantage of hydroelectric power is that nature constantly renews the water that provides the power. Coal and oil are fuels that can only be used once.
Not all rivers are ideal for generating electricity. A suitable river must have an adequate flow of water, and ideally there should be a steep fall. A steep waterfall is ideal, because it concentrates the energy of gravity into a short distance. The amount of water in the river, moreover, should not vary too much from season to season. This means that there must be adequate rainfall throughout the year. The river must be fairly near the industrial centers which will utilize its power, for the greater the distance the electricity has to travel, the more power is wasted.
Waterfalls can be constructed or enlarged by engineers. This is done by altering the slope or level of rivers at certain places, in order to concentrate a heavy fall of water at a chosen location. An artificial waterfall thus obtained is usually regulated by a dam. Projects of this kind, harnessing the flow of rivers are in process of construction in Egypt, Australia, and many other countries.
Japan is a country that relies on hydroelectric power. Her available coal resources proved inadequate for her industrial development and she was obliged to import fuel to drive machinery. But Japan is a mountainous country with abundant rainfall and a dense concentration of population, she has developed her resources of hydroelectricity to a greater extent than other Asian countries.
Which statement is NOT true according to the passage?
A.when the steam engine was invented, it soon replaced water as a source of power, so water was useless for a certain period
B.Factories could be built far from coal fields, because coal is portable
C.It was convenient to build a factory in the coal fields
D.Japan is a country that relies on hydroelectric power
