chools: Dont start classes so early in the morning. It may not be that the students who nod off at their desks are lazy. And it may not be that their parents have failed to enforce bedtime. Instead, it may be biologically that these sleepyhead students arent used to the early hour. "Maybe these kids are being asked to rise at the wrong time for their bodies," says Mary Carskadon, a professor looking at problems of adolescent sleep at Browns School of Medicine. Carskadon is trying to understand more about the effects of early school time on adolescents. And at a more basic level, she and her team are trying to learn more about how the biological changes of adolescence affect sleep needs and patterns. Carskadon says her work suggests that adolescents may need more sleep than they did at childhood, not less, as commonly thought. Sleep patterns change during adolescence, as any parent of an adolescent can prove. Most adolescents prefer to stay up later at night and sleep later in the morning. But its not just a matter of choice — their bodies are going through a change of sleep patterns. All of this makes the transfer from middle school to high school — which may start one hour earlier in the morning — all the more difficult, Carskadon says. With their increased need for sleep and their biological clocks set on the "sleep late, rise late" pattern, adolescents are up against difficulties when it comes to trying to be up by 5 or 6 am for a 7:30 am first bell. A short sleep on a desktop may be their bodys way of saying, "I need a timeout." Questions 16 to 18 are based on the passage you have just heard. 16. Why does Carskadon suggest that high schools should not start classes so early in the morning? 17. What might be a reason for the hard transfer from middle school to high school? 18. What is the passage mainly about?17.

B.Adolescents have to choose their sleep patterns.
C.Adolescents need more sleep than they used to.
D.Adolescents depend more on their parents.

arly island bicycle tour which is coming up in June. Good morning, Jane. Whats the bike tour all about? W: Well, its an event thats opened to anybody whod like to ride a bicycle through the streets of Montreal. The tour covers a standard distance of 65 kilometres. But the routes quite different every year. Even people whove already done it might enjoy doing it again. M: How long does it take to go the whole distance? W: It varies. Cyclists are free to go as fast or as slow and do as much or as little of the course as they like. M: Well, whats the typical pace for a participant? W: Between 12 and 30 kilometres per hour. Some cyclists stop along the way and dont cross the finish line until early evening. But the whole point is that there is no rush. Its not a race. M: I understand last years tour had 45,000 cyclists and it was the largest mass cycling event in the world. How many do you expect this year? W: The same as last year. And since we regularly have so many participants, can I take this opportunity to remind our listeners to sign up early? We filled up quickly last year and we had to refuse lots of applications. M: Before we close any other tips for all prospective cyclists? W:Yes. Take water with you. It is available at the relay station. But it helps to have an additional supply. And pack a good lunch with plenty of fruit for energy. Candy and chocolate dont do the trick. Questions 13 to 15 are based on the conversation you have just heard. 13. I can see, but put it on first, then Ill tell you if it suits you. M: I tried on about twenty times. This one isnt really what I wanted. W: Why did you buy it then? M: The salesman sold it to me before I realised what had happened. He just never stopped talking and he told me some stories about the latest fashion and special reductions. Before I could say anything hed wrapped it up and taken my money. W: Well, it doesnt look too bad. I think it looks good on you. M: But I went out to get a blue sweater with a V-neck, short sleeves and pattern, and I came home with a brown one with a high neck, long sleeves and no pattern. W: You must be easily taken in. Youve got to learn to stand up to these high-pressure salesmen. Theyll sell you all sorts of things you dont want if you dont watch out. M: Next time Ill send my wife.
