M: Yes, this is Jack Kordell from Hunter's Office Supplies. May I speak to Elaine Strong, please?
W: I'm sorry, but she is not in right now.
M: Well, do you know when she will be back?
W: Uh, yes, she should be here later on this afternoon maybe about 4: 30. May I take a message?
M: Yes. Ms. Strong sent me a brochure detailing your newest line of laptop computers with a description of other software products, but there wasn't any information about after-sales service.
W: Oh, I'm sorry. Would you like me to fax that to you?
M: Yes, but our fax is being repaired at the moment, and it won't be working until around 2: 30. Could you try sending that information around 3: 30? That should give me time to look over the material before I call Ms. Strong, say, around 5:00.
W: Sure. Could I have your name, telephone number, and fax number, please?
M: Yes. Jack Kordell and the phone number is 560-1287. The fax number is 560-1288.

W: All right, Mr. Kordell. Your phone number is 560-1287, and your fax number is 560-1288. Is that correct?

Fried foods have long been frowned upon. Nevertheless, the skillet(平底煎锅) is about our handiest and most useful piece of kitchen equipment. Sturdy lumberjacks(伐木工) and others engaged in active labor requiring 4,000 calories per day or more will take approximately one-third of their rations prepared in this fashion. Meat, eggs, and French toast cooked in this way are served in millions of homes daily. Apparently the consumers are not beset with more signs of indigestion than afflict those who insist upon broiling, roasting, or boiling. Some years ago one of our most eminent physiologists investigated the digestibility of fried potatoes. He found that the pan variety was more easily broken down for assimilation than when deep fat was employed. The latter, however, dissolved within the alimentary tract more readily than the boiled type. Furthermore, he learned, by watching the progress of the contents of the rate of digestion. Now all this is quite in contrast with "authority." Volumes have been written on nutrition, and everywhere the dictum has been accepted--no fried edibles of any sort for children. A few will go so far as to forbid this style. of cooking wholly. Now and then an expert will be bold enough to admit that he uses them himself, the absence of discomfort being explained on the ground that he posses a powerful gastric apparatus. We can of course sizzle perfectly good articles to death so that they will be leathery and tough. But thorough heating, in the presence of shortening, is not the awful crime that it has been labeled. Such dishes stimulate rather than retard contractions of the gall bladder. Thus it is that bile mixes with the nutriment shortly after it leaves the stomach.
We don't need to allow our foodstuffs to become oil soaked, but other than that, there seems to be no basis for the widely heralded prohibition against this method. But notions become fixed. The first condemnation probably arose because an "oracle" suffered from dyspepsia(消化不良) which he ascribed to some fried item on the menu. The theory spread. Others agreed with him, and after a time the doctrine became incorporated in our textbooks. The belief is now tradition rather than proved fact. It should have been refuted long since, as experience has demonstrated its falsity.
This passage focuses on ______.
A.why the skillet is a handy piece of kitchen equipment
B.how the experts can mislead the public in the area of food preparation
C.the digestibility of fried foods
D.why fried foods have long been frowned upon

Although from an objective point of view, we can see joining a gang brings more danger than it saves you from, this is not always the way it is seen by kids. In slums such as the Bronx or the very worst case, Compton, children will no doubt be beaten and robbed if they do not join a gang. Of course they can probably get the same treatment from rivals when in a gang. The gang also provides some money for these children who quite often need to feed their families. The reason kids think that the gang will keep them safe is from propaganda from the gangs. Gang members will say that no one will get hurt and make a public show of revenge if a member is hurt or killed.
So, as you have seen gangs are a product of the environment we have created for ourselves. There are some factors that include oppression, the media, greed, violence and other gangs. There seems to be no way to end the problem of gangs without totally restructuring the modern economy and value system. Since the chance of this happening is minimal, we must learn to cope with gangs and try to keep their following to a minimum. Unfortunately there is no real organized force to help fight gangs. Of course the police are supposed to do this but this situation quite often deals with racial issues also and the police forces regularly display their increasing inability to deal fairly with these issues. What we need are more people to form. organizations like the "Guardian Angels" a gang-like group that makes life very tough for street gangs that are breaking laws.
What does the author of this passage believe is the real cause of gang enrollment'?
A.Altering political system.
B.Seeking fortune.
C.Avoiding discrimination.
D.Obtaining protection.
