"To be or not to be." Outside the Bible, these six words are the most famous in all the literature of the world. They were spoken by Hamlet when he was thinking aloud, and they are the most famous words in Shakespeare because Hamlet was speaking not only for himself but for every thinking man and woman. To be or not to be — to live or not to live, to live richly and abundantly and eagerly, or to live dully and meanly and scarcely. A philosopher once wanted to know whether he was alive or not, which is a good question for everyone to Out to himself occasionally. He answered it by saying: "I think, therefore I am."

But the best definition of existence I ever saw was one written by another philosopher who said: "To be is to be in relations." If this is true, then the more relations a living thing has, the more it is alive. To live abundantly means simply to increase the range and intensity of our relations. Unfortunately we are so constituted that we get to love our routine. But apart from our regular occupation how much are we alive? If you are interested only in your regular occupation, you are alive only to that extent. So far as other things are concerned — poetry and prose, music, pictures, sports, unselfish friendships, politics, international affairs — you are dead.

Advice for Families from the Scottish Council for Research in Education.

"If you are worried discuss this with a teacher."

Bullying is not easy to define. Sometimes it involves hitting or kicking. But threats, teasing, and taunting are more common and can be more damaging. The word "bullying" is used to describe many different Woes of behaviour ranging from teasing or deliberately leaving an individual out of a social gathering or deliberately leaving un individual out of a social gathering or ignoring them, to serious assaults and abuse. Sometimes it is an individual who is doing the bullying and sometimes it is a group.

The important thing is not the action but the effect on the victim. No one should ever underestimate the fear that a bullied child feels.

This advice sums up the most important actions to take:

If someone in your family is being bullied at school, you have to do something to help. You must talk to a teacher.

If you are worried that someone in your family may be bullied -- discuss this with a teacher.

If you want to help rid schools of bullying -- work with the teachers to make school safer and happier.

If you are not satisfied with the school's response, do not give up -- other sources of help are available.

Support and understanding at home are important in helping people to cope with bullying -- families should do all they can to help children and young people value themselves.

Children and young people who witness or become aware of bullying may be unsure what to do and whether they should tell someone. Make sure they know that they should talk to a parent or teacher, and why.

The KEY MESSAGES to get across to the person being bullied are:

It's not your, fault that you are being bullied.

You don't have to face this on your own.

I used to find notes left in the collection basket, beautiful notes about my homilies and about the writer's thoughts on the daily scriptural readings. The person who penned the notes would add reflections to my thoughts and would always include some quotes from poets and mystics he or she had read and remembered and loved. The notes fascinated me. Here was someone immersed in a search for truth and beauty. Words had been treasured, words that were beautiful. And I felt as if the words somehow delighted in being discovered, for they Were obviously very generous to the as yet anonymous writer of the notes. And now this person was in turn learning the secret of sharing, them. Beauty so shines when given away. The only truth that exists is, in that sense, free.

SECTION B ENGLISH TO CHINESE

Directions: Translate the following text into Chinese.

But the worst of it isn't society’s work-ethic morality; it's your own, which you never knew you bad. You find out how much serf-satisfaction was gained from even the most simple work--related task: a well-worded letter, a well-handled phone call--even a clean fire. Being useful to yourself isn't enough,

But then almost everyone has heard about the need to be a useful member of society. What you didn’t know about was the loneliness. You’ve spent your life almost constantly surrounded by people,in classes,in dorms and at work. To suddenly find yourself with only your cat to talk to an day distorts your sense of reality. You begin to worry that flights of fancy might become one way.

But you always were, and still are, stronger than that. You maintain balance and perspective, mainly through resorting frequently to sarcasm and irrevence. Although something going wrong in any aspect of your life now seems to push you into temporary despair much more easily than before, you have done very important things to hang on to--people who care, your sense of humor your talents, your cat and your hopes.

And beyond that, you've gained something--a little more knowledge and a lot more compassion. You've learned the valive of the rolitime your scorned and the importance of the job you took for granted. But most of all, you've learned what a 7.6 per cent unemployment rate" really means."

SECTION B ENGLISH TO CHINESE

Directions: Translate the following text into Chinese.

That relaxation is a necessity is a fact generally admitted but most people do not suspect that, in order to rest the mind, relaxation must be active. That is not to say that our activity must entail strenuous effort, but only that it must prevent that passiveness which is conductive to dispersion of thought. On the pretext of resting, some people allow their thoughts to drift hither and thither according to their imagination. This is a harmful habit which is weakening to our mental powers, and is, moreover, unreasonable. Complete inertia is much more tiring than moderate work; it leads to incurable boredom, destroys intellectual and moral energy; in a word, it impairs our higher faculties. The most profitable kind of relaxation is derived from physical exercise or from an easy occupation. Walking is such an exercise, and is particularly recommended, for it fills the lungs with the air they need, loosens the joint, and tones up the muscles. Music, likewise, rests, soothes, and elevates the mind. In order that these occupations may give the benefit they are intended to bestow, sufficient attention must be given to them, for rest, apart from the time spent in sleep, does not consist in the desperation of one's attention but in applying it to an easy occupation.
