The game begins with a kick-off from one end of a 100-yard field. The receiving ruggers, as a rugby team is called, attempt to move the ball down the field, the opposing team attempts to stop the man with the ball.
The rules are quite simple. You cannot tackle anyone but the man who is carrying the ball, and once the ball carrier is tackled, he must give up the ball. Obviously, a good strategy for moving the ball. downfield is to carry it as far as possible, then pass the ball before being tackled.
If the ball carder can travel the length of the field, his team is awarded four points, and another two points are won by kicking the ball over the goalpost after the score. Penalties are equally simple, tackling a player who is not carrying the ball carries a ten-yard penalty. Much of rugby's reputation for roughness stems from the fact that the players wear no pads. To Americans accustomed to seeing professional foot-ball players in suits and helmets like armor, a rugby player's uniform. seems suicidally simple. Most ruggers wear a very thick jersey, heavy gymnasium shorts, heavy socks, rugby shoes, and a mouthpiece. Ruggers use other equipment or pads only when an injury requires protection. But even with this minimal equipment, the game is apparently not as brutal as it might seem. The players are quite satisfied with the lack of padding and helmets and actually think the game might be too rough if players used more equipment. "Human nature is not to hit as hard if no one is wearing pads," one rugger explains. Rugby games are played in two halves, each lasting forty minutes. Teams always meet to play two games consecutively, back-to-back. Again, playing a demanding physical sport like rugby for more than 160 minutes seems like an impossible task, but the ruggers love this idea. "It gives everyone on the team a chance to get into the game," they say. Rugby is slowly catching on in America. The sport is gaining an enthusiastic following among college teams and in independent ruggy "unions" organized on the British model. It has all the appeal of football, but it is simpler and requires much less costly equipment. Rugby is ready to be rediscovered.
The main purpose of this passage is to ______.
A.compare English and American sports
B.compare rugby to football
C.discuss the brutality of rugby
D.provide a brief introduction to rugby

Broadly speaking, the Englishman is a quiet, shy, reserved person who is fully relaxed only among people who knows very well. When he meets with strangers of foreigners, he often seems uneasy, even embarrassed. You have only to witness a commuter train any morning or evening to see the truth of this, serious-looking businesses and women sit reading their newspaper or dozing in a corner, no one speaks. In fact, to do so would seem most usual. An English wit, pretending to be giving advice to overseas visitors, once suggested, “on entering a railway compartment shake hands with all the passengers. ”Needless to say, he was not being serious. There is an unwritten but clearly understood code of behavior. which, if bro ken, makes the person immediately the object of suspicion.
It is a well-known fact that the English have an obsession with their weather and that, given half a chance, they will talk about it in length. Some people argue that it is because English weather forecast is undependable, as a result, English weather is a source of interest to everyone. This may be so. Certainly Englishmen cannot have much faith in the meteorological experts-the weathermen-who, after promising glorious, sunny weather for the following day, are often proved wrong when an anti-cyclone or as inaccurate as the weathermen in his prediction. This helps to explain the seemingly odd sight of an Englishman leaving home on a bright, sunny summer morning with a raincoat slung over an arm and an umbrella in his hand. So variable is the weather that by lunch time there could be thundering.
The overseas visitors may be excused for showing surprise at the number of references to weather that the English make to each other in the course of a single day. Very often conventional greetings are re placed by comments on the weather. “Nice day, isn’ t?” “Beautiful ! ”may well be heard instead of “Good morning”, how are you? “Although the foreigner may consider this exaggerated and comic, it is worthwhile pointing out that it could be used to his advantage. If he wants to start a conversation with an Englishman ( or woman) but is at a loss to know where to begin he would do well to mention the state of the weather. It is a safe subject, which will encourage even the most reserved Englishmen to enter into a conversation.
What is the reason that the Englishmen enter into a conversation?
A.Because the English have developed many different attitudes and habits.
B.Because living on an island separated from the rest of Europe has much to do with it.
C.Because the English are quite shy and reserved.
D.Because an Englishman often seems uneasy, even embarrassed when he meets with strangers or foreigners.

In order to solve a computational problem, its solution must be specified in terms of asequence of computational steps, each of which may be performed by a human or a digital computer. If you want to solve the computational problem with a computer, you shouldlearn how to program. The task of developing programs for the solution of computationalproblems is referred to as programming. Computer programming is the process of planningand creating a sequence of steps for a computer to follow. In general, this process will helpus resolve a problem, which is either too tedious or difficult to work out otherwise. Soprogramming is breaking a task down into small steps.
Programming is sometimes contrasted with coding. Coding generally refers to thewriting of programs for given program specification, while programming includes the task of preparing the program specification as well as that of writing the program. The text of aprogram is sometimes referred to as code, and lines of program text are referred to as lines ofcode, especially in the case of machine-language programs. The term coder is used todescribe a person engaged exclusively in implementing program specifications prepared byothers. What ' s actually involved in programming - the actual process of writing programs? Here' s a quick overview of the process:
? Write a program.
? Compile the program.
? Run the program.
? Debug the program.
? Repeat the whole process until the program is finished.
