B: I'm sorry to hear that, sir. I'll get someone right away.

B: Well, I'll speak to the housekeeper about it, sir, but I'm sure

A: And that hall porter's another one. You should get rid of him, too. He doesn't know how to treat guests with respect.

B: Well, I'm very sorry, sir, but George has been with us for twenty years and we've never had any complaints about him until now.

A: And another thing! What are you going to do about those foreigners in number 27? Carrying on all night in that funny language! Shouting, they were. It shouldn't be allowed.

B: If you like, sir. I'll have a word with them and ask them to be a little more considerate.

SECTION A CONVERSATIONS

Directions: In this section you will hear several conversations. Listen to the conversations carefully and then answer the questions that follow.

听力原文:M: Have you ever visited a redwood forest? I recently had chance to go to Muirwoods National Monument, north of a Francisco.

W: I've never seen a redwood tree. I really can't imagine how big they are.

M: The coastal redwoods are the tallest living things. Some are more than three hundred and fifty feet high. But none of the trees at Muirwoods is that high. You have to go further north in California to see the tallest trees.

W: You said that Muirwoods is near San Francisco? I guess it must be quite a tourist attraction.

M: Yes. It's less than an hour's drive away, so it's easy to get to.

W: I've heard that many redwood trees are thousands of year old. Are the ones in Muirwoods that old?

M: The oldest documented age for a coastal redwood is more than two thousand years. The trees at Muirwoods are 400 to 800 years old.

W: Why have they survived so long?

M: They have remarkable resistance to forest fires. Their tough, thick bark protects the trees during a fire. The coastal redwoods also like a damp, foggy climate.

W: Then since Muirwoods is near foggy San Francisco, it must be ideal for the trees survival. I can't wait to go there and see them.

What is the main subject of this conversation?

A.San Francisco.

B.Forest fires.

C.Redwood trees.

D.Survival skills.

SECTION A CONVERSATIONS

Directions: In this section you will hear several conversations. Listen to the conversations carefully and then answer the questions that follow.

听力原文:M: Hi, Sarah. What's up?

W: Oh, hi, I just got out a history class. I had to give a presentation.

M: How did it go?

W: Terribly. I'm sure I made a fool of myself.

M: Why? Weren't you prepared?

W: No, it was not that. I just get so embarrassed and nervous whenever I have to speak in front of a group of people. I stand up and my face gets red and then I get even more nervous because ] know everyone can see me blushing.

M: It's not so bad to blush.

W: But it happens all the time. If the professor asks a question and I know the answer, I blush like crazy if he calls on me. Doesn't that ever happen to you?

M: No, not really. Maybe you should just try to forget about the people. Look at something else in the room like the exit sign.

W: I guess I could try that but I doubt it'll help.

M: You know, we talked about it in psychology class. Blushing, even thought it's involuntary, is more or less a learned behavior.

W: What do you mean?

M: Oh, children hardly ever blush at all. And among adults, supposedly, women blush more than men.

W: I wonder why?

M: I don't know, but I have a friend at high schools, Brian Smith. It was really easy to make him blush. He turned red whenever a waitress would ask him for his order.

W: I'm not that bad. Well, I've got to get going for my next class. I'll talk to you later.

What was the woman's problem?

A.She felt embarrassed in class.

B.Her presentation received a poor grade.

C.She had not completed her assignment.

D.She was unable to attend her psychology class.

Section B

Directions: In this section, you will hear 3 short passages. At the end of each passage, you will hear some questions. Both the passage and the questions will be spoken only once. After you hear a question, you must choose the best answer from the four choices marked A, B, C and D.

听力原文: Have you ever noticed advertisements which say "Learn a foreign language in 6 weeks, or your money back! From the first day your pronunciation will be excellent. Just send..." and so on? Of course, it never happens quite like that. The only language that is easy to learn is the mother tongue. And think bow much practice that gets! Before the Second World War people usually learnt a foreign language in order to read for literature of the country. Now speaking the foreign language is what most people want. Every year many millions of people start learning one. How do they do it?

Some people try at home with books and records or tapes; some use radio or television programs; others go to evening classes. If they use the language only 2 or 3 times a week, learning it will take a long time, like language learning at school. A few people try to learn a language fast by studying for 6 or more hours a day. It is clearly easier to learn the language in the country where it is spoken. However, most people cannot afford this, and for many it is not necessary, they need the language in order to do their work better. For example, scientists and doctors chiefly need to be able to read books and reports in the foreign language. Whether the language is learnt quickly or slowly, it is hard work. Machines and good books will help, but they cannot do the student's work for him.

(27)

A.Positive.

B.Negative.

C.Objective.

D.Indifferent.

Section B

Directions: There are 2 passages in this section. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A), B), C) and D). You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on Answer Sheet 2 with a single line through the centre.

Passage One

Questions 52 to 56 are based on the following passage.

When global warming finally came, it stuck with a vengeance(报复). In some regions, temperatures rose several degrees in less than a century. Sea levels shot up nearly 400 feet, flooding coastal settlements and forcing people to migrate inland. Deserts spread throughout the world as vegetation shifted drastically in North America, Europe and Asia. After driving many of the animals around them to near extinction, people were forced to abandon their old way of life for a radically new survival strategy that resulted in widespread starvation and disease. The adaptation was farming: the global warming crisis that gave rise to it happened more than 10,000 years ago.

As environmentalists convene in Rio de Janeiro this week to ponder the global climate of the future, earth scientists are in the midst of a revolution in understanding how climate has changed in the past, and how those changes have transformed human existence. Researchers have begun to piece together an illuminating picture of the powerful geological and astronomical forces that have combined to change the planet's environment from hot to cold, wet to dry and back again over a time period stretching back hundreds of millions of years.

Most important, scientists are beginning to realize that the climatic changes have had a major impact on the evolution of the human species. New research now suggests that climate shifts have played a key role in nearly every significant turning point in human evolution: from the dawn of primates (灵长目动物) some 65 million years ago to human ancestors rising up to walk on two legs, from the huge expansion of the human brain to the rise of agriculture. Indeed, the human history has not been merely touched by global climate change, some scientists argue, it has in some instances been driven by it.

The new research has profound implications for the environmental summit in Rio. Among other things, the findings demonstrate that dramatic climate change is nothing new for planet Earth. The benign(宜人的) global environment that has existed over the past 10,000 years—uring which agriculture, writing, cities and most other features of civilization appeared—s a mere bright spot in a much larger pattern of widely varying climate over the ages. In fact, the pattern of climate change in the past reveals that Earth's climate will almost certainly go through dramatic changes in the future—ven without the influence of human activity.

Farming emerged as a survival strategy because man had been obliged_.

A. to give up the former way of life

B. to leave the coastal areas

C. to follow the ever-shifting vegetation

D. to abandon his original settlement

第10题

The purpose of a letter of application is to help you to "sell" yourself. You should state the job you want clearly, and should tell what your abilities are and what you have done. It should be simple, human, personal and brief without leaving out any necessary facts.

In writing a letter of application, a possible employer may want to know a number of important things. What is your qualifications(资历)? What achievements have you made? And what are your aims? The opening paragraph is perhaps the most important part. Try to keep your opening sentences to

the needs or interests of the employer, not to your own needs or desires.

Be clear about the kind of job for which you are now applying. College graduates looking for their first positions often ask "What can I provide in a letter?" Employers want to know about your experience. Certainly, a beginner has no experience. The answer is that everything you have ever done is experience.

It is important to write good strong closing words for your letter. Ask for an interview or give the possible employer something definite to do or expect. An excellent idea is to enclose(随信附上) an envelope with your address and a stamp. That makes it easier for a possible employer to get in touch with you.

The purpose of writing a letter of application is to ______.

A.sell oneself as a product

B.try your best to get a good job

C.help a company to hire people

D.make others to know about you
