??Questions 1 to 5 arc based on the following passage:

Shopping for clothes is not the same experience for a man as it is for a woman. A man goes shopping because he needs something, his purpose is settled and decided in advance. He knows what he wants and his objective is to find it and buy it; the price is a secondary consideration.

All men simply walk into a shop and ask the assistant for what they went. If the shop has it in stock, the salesman promptly producesit, and the business of trying it on proceeds at once. All being we1l, the deal can beand of ten is completed in less than five minutes, with hardly any chat and to everyone&39;s satisfaction.

For a man, slight problems may begin when the shop does not have what he wants, or does not have exactly what he wants. In that case the salesman, as the name implies, tries to sell the customer something else. He offers the nearest he can to the article required. No good salesman bring sout such a substitute directly, he does so with skill: “I know this jacket is not the sty]e you want, Sir! but would you like to try it for size? It happens to be the color you mentioned.”

Few men have patience with this treatment, and the usual responseis:

“This is the right color and may be the right size, but I should be wasting my time and yours by trying it on.”

Now how does a woman go about buying clothes? In almost every respect she does so in the opposite way. Her shopping not often based on need. She has never fully made up her mind what she wants, and she is only “having a look round”. She is always open to persuasion; indeed she sets great store by what the saleswoman tells her. She will try on any number of things. Uppermost in her mind is the thought of finding something that everyone thinks suits her.

Contrary to a lot of jokes, most women have an excellent sense of value when they buy clothes. They are always on the look out for the unexpected bargain. Faced with a roomful of dresses, a woman may easily spend an hour going from one rail to another, to and fro, before selecting the dresses she wants to try on. It is a 1aborious(费时的) process, but apparently an enjoyable one.

Most dress shops provide chairs for the waiting husbands.

When a man is buying clothes, .??

A.he buys cheap things, regardless of quality

B.he chooses things that others recommend

C.he does not mind how much he has to pay for the right things

D.he buys good quality things, so long as they are not too expensive

A.He buys similar things of the color he wants.

B.He usually does not buy anything.

C.He tries on some other things, but never buys anything.

D.So long as the size is right, he buys the thing.

What does the passage tell us about women shoppers?

A.They welcome suggestions from anyone.

B.Women rarely consider buying cheap clothes.

C.Women often buy things without giving the matter proper thought

D.They listen to advice but never take it.

In commerce a good salesman is one who___.A.treats his customers kindly.

B.always has in stock just what customers want

C.does not waste his time on difficult customers

D.sells something a customer does not particularly want

What is the most obvious difference between men and women shoppers?A.The fact that men do not try clothes on in a shop.

B.Women bargain for their clothes, but men do not.

C.Women stand up to shop, but men sit down.

D.The time they took over buying clothes.

Questions are based on the following passage.

Let children learn to judge their own work.A child learning to talk does not learn by being corrected all the time: if corrected too much, he will stop talking. He notices a thousand times a day the difference between the language he uses and the language those around him use.Bit by bit, he makes the necessary changes to make his language like other people&39;s.(78) In the same way, children learn to do all the other things without being taught-to walk, run, climb, whistle, ride a bicycle, compare their own performances with those of more skilled people, and slowly make the needed changes. But in school we never give a child a chance to find out his mistakes and correct them for himself. We do it all for him.We act as if we thought that he would never notice a mistake unless it was pointed out to him, or correct it unless he was made to.Let him work out, with the help of other children if he wants it, what his word says, what the answer is to that problem, whether this is a good way of saying or doing this or not.

If it is a matter of fight answers, as it may be in mathematics or science, give him the answer book.Let him correct his own papers. Why should we teachers waste time on such routine work? Our job should be to help the child when he tells that he can&39; t find the way to get the fight answer.(79) Let the children learn what all educated persons must some day learn, how to measure their own understanding, how to know what they know or do not know.

According to the passage, the best way for children to learn things is by __________ 查看材料

A.asking older people many questions

B.listening to skilled people"s advice

C.making mistakes and correcting them

D.doing what other people do

Questionsare based on the following passage:

Suicide has been a cause of concern in most societies for a long time. The classical Greeks, for example, required people who wanted to kill themselves to get permission from the senate.

While this law is not without humor by today' s standards, it clearly shows an awareness of the problem in times gone by. In today' s society, suicide is much more prevalent than we want to admit. Why do people try to take their own lives?

(80) The motives for suicide can be categorized into areas such as a failure, wrath (暴怒),the need for attention, stress, and so on. However, the qualities of a person who wants to take his own life change from person to person, making it difficult to depict (描写) the typical vic-tim. To make the problem even more confusing, people will often camouflage (掩盖) their true feelings, thus causing their friends to disregard problems that should be viewed as serious.

In the United States, a network of centers has been created to attempt to prevent suicides.People who are bitter, worried, or depressed are encouraged to contact workers at these centers. These workers, often trained volunteers, offer benevolent advice to the callers, trying to help the callers to see that suicide as a solutions to problems is an illusion. The accomplishments of these centers, insofar( 到这个程度 ) as their effectiveness to reduce suicide is concerned, are minimal.

However, they have helped a lot of people with a wide variety of problems. So, in the somewhat amorphous (难以名状的) area of man helping his fellow man, they are certainly a success.

Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the article? 查看材料

A.The classical Greeks did not know the existence of suicide.

B.Suicide has always been prevalent in all parts of the world.

C.In today" s society, there are quite a number of people who commit suicide.

D.Nowadays suicide is not as common as it was in the past.

Questions are based on the following passage.

Names have gained increasing importance in the competitive world of higher education.

As colleges strive for market share, they are looking for names that project the image theywant or reflect the changes they hope to make. Trenton State College, for example, becamethe College of New Jersey nine years ago when it began raising admissions standards andappealing to students from throughout the state.

"All I hear in higher education is, brand, brand, brand," said Tim Westerbeck, whospecialises in branding and is managing director of Lipman Heame, a marketing firm basedin Chicago that works with universities and other nonprofit organisations. "There has beena sea change over the last 10 years. Marketing used to be almost a dirty word in highereducation."

Not all efforts at name changes are successful, of course. In 1997, the New School forSocial Research became New School University to reflect its growth into a collection of eightcolleges, offering a list of majors that includes psychology, music, urban studies and manage-ment. But New Yorkers continued to call it the New School. Now, after spending an undis-closed sum on an online survey and a marketing consultant"s creation of"naming structures","brand architecture" and "identity systems", the university has come up with a new name: theNew School. Beginning Monday, it will adopt new logos, banners, business cards and evennew names for the individual colleges, all to include the words "the New School".

Changes in names generally reveal significant shifts in how a college wants to beperceived. In altering its name from Cal State, Hayward, to Cal State, East Bay, the universityhoped to project its expanding role in two mostly suburban countries east of San Francisco.

Beaver College turned itself into Arcadia University in 2001 for several reasons: tobreak the connection with its past as a women"s college, to promote its growth into a full-fledged (完全成熟的)university. and officials acknowledged, to eliminate some jokesabout the college"s old name on late-night television and "morning zoo" radio shows.

Many college officials said changing a name and image could produce substantial re-suits. At Arcadia, in addition to the rise in applications, the average student"s test score hasincreased by 60 points, Juli Roebeck, an Arcadia spokeswoman, said.

According to Tim Westerbeck, colleges or universities changing their names to competefor market share__________. 查看材料

A.is inadvisable

B.is actually a marketing strategy

C.reflects they don"t pay much attention to their inner quality

D.has positive influence on the development of higher education

Questions 下列各 are based on the following passage. Ive been writing for most of my life. The book Writing Without Teachers introduced me to one distinctionand one practice that has helped my writing processes tremendously. The distinction is between the creative mindand the critical mind. While you need to employ both to get to a finished result, they cannot work in parallel nomatter how much we might like to think so. Trying to criticize writing on the fly is possibly the single greatest barrier to writing that most of us encounter. If you are listening to that 5th grade English teacher correct your grammar while you are trying to capture afleeting ( 稍纵即逝的) thought, the thought will die. If you capture the fleeting thought and simply share it withthe world in raw form; no one is likely to understand. You must learn to create first and then criticize if you want tomake writing the tool for thinking that it is. The practice that can help you past your learned bad habits of trying to edit as you write is what Elbow calls"free writing". In free writing, the objective is to get words down on paper non-stop, usually for 15-20 minutes. Nostopping, no going back, no criticizing. The goal is to get the words flowing. As the words begin to flow, the ideaswill come out from the shadows and let themselves be captured on your notepad or your screen. Now you have taw materials that you can begin to work with using the critical mind that youve persuaded tosit on the side and watch quietly. Most likely, you will believe that this will take more time than you actually haveand you will end up staring blankly at the page as the deadline draws near. Instead of staring at a blank screen, start filling it with words no matter how bad. Halfway through youravailable time, stop and rework your raw writing into something closer to finished product. Move back and forthuntil you run out of time and the final result will most likely be far better than your current practices. When the author says the creative mind and the critical mind "cannot work in parallel" (Line 3, Para.1 ) in the writing process, he means ____

A.no one can be both creative and critical

B.they cannot be regarded as equally important

C.they are in constant conflict with each other

D.one cannot use them at the same time

Questions下列各are based on the following passage. A recent global survey of 2,000 high-net-worth individUalS found that 60% were not planning on a traditional retirement. Among US participants, 75% expected to continue working in some capacity even after stepping away from full-time jobs. "Manyof these people made their wealth by doing sometting theyre passionate (有激情的) about,”.says Daniel Egan, head of behavioral finance for Barclays Wealth Americas. " Given the.. choice, they prefer to continue workirtg, " Barclays calls these people"nevertirees." Unlike many Americans compelled into early retirement by company restrictiolls, the average nevertiree often has no one forcing his hand. tf 106-year-old investor Irving Kahn, head of his own family firm, wants to keep coming to work every day, whos going to stop him? Seventy-eight-year-old Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburgs job security is guaranteed in the Constitution. It may seem that these elderly people are trying to cheat death. In fact, they are. And its working. Howard Friedman, a professor at UC Riverside, found in his research that those who work hardest and are successful in their careers often live the longest lives. "People are generally being given bad advice to slow down, take it easy, stop worrying, and retire to Florida,, he says. He described one study participant, still working at the age of 100, who was. recently disappointed to see his son retire. "Were beginning to see a change in how people view retirement," says George LeeSon, codirector of the Institute of Population Ageing at Oxford. Where once ret~rement was seen as a brief reward after a long struggle through some miserable job, it is now akin (近似) to being cast aside, What Leeson terms "the Warren Buffett effect" is becoming more broadly appealing as individuals come to "view retirement as not simply being linked to economic productivity but also about contribution, " Observers are split on whether this is a wholly good thing, On the one hand, companies and financial firms can benefit from the wisdom of a resilient ( 坚韧的 ) chief, On the other, the new generation can find it more difficult to advance--an argument that typically holds little sway to a nevertiree. What do we learn about the so-called "nevertiree$" ?

A.They are passionate about making a fortune.

B.They have no choice but to continue working.

C.They love what they do and choose not to retire.

D.They will not retire unless they are compelled to.

Questions 36 to 40 are based on the following passage. In our culture, the sources of what we call a sense of “mastery”—feeling important and worth-while-and the sources of what we call a sense “pleasure”-finding life enjoyable-are not always identical. Women often are told “You can’t have it all.” Sometimes what the speaker really is saying is: “You chose a career, so you can’t expect to have closer relationships or a happy family life.” or “You have a wonderful husband and children—What’s all this about wanting a career?” But women need to understand and develop both aspects of well-being, if they are to feel good about themselves.

Our study shows that, for women, well-being has two dimensions. One is mastery, which includes self-esteem (自尊), a sense of control over your life, and low levels of anxiety and depression. Mastery is closely related to the “doing” side of life, to work and activity. Pleasure is the other dimensions, and it is composed of happiness, satisfaction and optimism (乐观). It is tied more closely to the “feeling” side of life. The two are independent of each other. A woman could be high in mastery and low in pleasure, and vice versa. For example, a woman who has a good job, but whose mother has just died, might be feeling very good about herself and in control of her work life, but the pleasure side could be damaged for a time.

The concepts of mastery and pleasure can help us identify the sources of well-being for women, and remedy past mistakes. In the past, women were encouraged to look only at the feeling side of life as the source of all well-being. But we know that both mastery and pleasure are critical. And mastery seems to be achieved largely through work. In our study, all the groups of employed women rated significantly higher in mastery than did women who were not employed.

A woman’s well-being is enhanced (增进) when she takes on multiple roles. At least by middle adulthood, the women who were involved in a combination of roles-marriages, motherhood, and employment were the highest in well-being, despite warnings about stress and strain.

第36题:It can be inferred from the first paragraph that ________.

A) for women, a sense of “mastery” is more important than a sense of “pleasure”

B) for women, a sense of “pleasure” is more important than a sense of “mastery”

C) women can’t have a sense of “mastery” and a sense of “pleasure” at the same time

D) a sense of “mastery” and a sense of “pleasure” are both indispensable to women

Questionsare based on the following passage:

In America Mother' s Day is celebrated on the second Sunday in May. On that day we send our mothers a special Mother' s Day card, and perhaps some flowers or candy, to show our love and appreciation for all they have done for us. Although Mother' s Day is a relatively new holiday in America, more and more other countries are also setting aside a day to honor.their mothers.

I want to tell you today how the idea of having a special day for mothers began. It all started over a hundred years ago with a woman named Anna May Jarvis.

Anna was born on May 1, 1864, just before the end of the Civil War and the assassination of President Lincoln. She was the daughter of a "minister", which in American English means a church leader. She was a quiet girl who liked to study in school, and she liked everyone and was liked by everyone as well.

After she became an adult, Anna worked for a life insurance company in Philadelphia, Penn-sylvania--a city about halfway between New York City and Washington, D. C.. Then, in 1906,just two weeks after Anna' s 42nd birthday, her mother died. It was the second Sunday in May.

In the months that followed, Anna began to change. (78)No longer was she so gentle, so relaxed and easy-going. Instead she now had just one goal for her life--to have her mother and all other mothers honored throughout the whole world on the second Sunday of May.

After more than a year of careful planning, Anna arranged the first Mother' s Day church service, on May 10, 1908, in Grafton, West Virginia. (79)The next year Anna was able to get the city of Philadelphia, where she lived and worked, to proclaim the second Sunday of Mayas an official Mother' s Day--the first city to do so. After three more years, the state of West Vir-ginia, where Anna' s mother had lived, made Mother' s Dayr.a statewide observance--not a holi-day in the normal sense, but still a day to remember what mothers have done for their children and society.

Which answer is NOT right about Mother‘ s Day? 查看材料

Questions下列各are based on the following passage. As a society we might want to rethink the time and money spent on education, so that these resources can benefit a greater percentage of the population. Ideally, both high schools and colleges can prepare individuals for the ever-changing roles that are likely to be expected of them. High school degrees offer far less in the way of preparation for work than they might, or than many other nations currently offer, creating a growing skills gap in our economy. We encourage students to go on to college whether they are prepared or not, or have a clear sense of purpose or interest, and now have the highest college dropout rate in the world. We might look to other countries for models of how high schools can offer better training, as well as the development of a work ethic ( 勤奋工作的美德 ) and the intellectual skills needed for continued learning and development. I recommend Harvards 2011 "Pathways to Prosperity" report for more attention to the "forgotten half" (those who do not go on to college) and ideas about how to address this issue. Simultaneously, the liberal arts become more important than ever. In a know.ledge economy where professional roles change rapidly and many college students are preparing for positio~_s that may not even exist yet, the skill set needed is one that prepares them for change and continued learning. Learning to express ideas well in both writing and speech, knowing how to find information, and knowing how to do research are all solid background skills for a wide variety of roles, and such training is more important than any particular major in a liberal arts college. We need to continue to value broad preparation in thinking skills that will serve for a lifetime. Students also need to learn to work independently and to make responsible decisions. The lengthening path to adulthood appears exacerbated (恶化) by parental involvement in the college years. Given the rising investment in college education, parental concern is not surprising, but learning where and when to intervene (干预 ) will help students take more ownership of the outcomes of these increasingly costly educations. What kind of education does the author think is ideal?

A.It benefits the great majority of the general population.

B.It prepares students to meet the future needs of society.

C.It encourages students to learn throughout their lives.

D.It ensures that students expectations are successfully fulfilled.
