Thanksgiving Day is the most truly American of the national holidays in the United States and is most closely connected with the earliest history of the country.
In 1620, the settlers, or Pilgrims, sailed to America on the May Flower, seeking a place where they could have freedom of worship. After a two-month voyage, in icy November, they landed at what is now Plymouth, Massachusetts.
During their first winter, over half of the settlers died of starvation or epidemics (流行病). Those who survived began sowing in the first spring.
All summer long they waited for the harvests with great anxiety, knowing that their lives and the future of the colony depended on the coming harvest. Finally the field produced a yield rich beyond expectations. And therefore it was decided that a day of thanksgiving to the Lord be fixed. Years later, President of the Unites States decided the fourth Thursday of November as Thanksgiving Day every year. The celebration of Thanksgiving Day has been observed on that date until today.
The pattern of the Thanksgiving celebration had never changed through the years. The big family dinner is planned months ahead. On the dinner table, people will find apples. oranges, chestnuts and grapes. There will be pudding, mince (肉馅) pie, other varieties of food and cranberry (蔓越橘) juice and squash (柠檬汁). The best and most attractive among them are roast turkey and pumpkin pie. They have been the most traditional and favorite food on Thanksgiving Day throughout the years.
From the passage, the Pilgrims sailed to America in order to______.
A.seek a place for freedom of worship
B.seek for food
C.seek for the new land

What is the logical order of the following paragraph? The cloning of Dolly involved several steps. First, cells that had previously been taken from Dolly’s mother were starved for five days, which caused them to stop dividing. This interruption of the cells’ division cycle made it easier for them to reprogram themselves to start growing a new organism. After five days, the nuclei of these cells were removed and transferred into an unfertilized sheep egg, from which the natural nucleus had previously been removed. In the next step, the egg was grown in the laboratory for a period of time. Then the egg was implanted into a different sheep, where it grew normally. When the sheep finally gave birth, the lamb was an exact genetic copy, or clone, of the sheep that had provided the transferred nucleus, not of the sheep that had provided the egg.
A、Chronological order
B、Logical division of ideas
C、Cause and effect
D、Inductive method
E、Deductive method

案例分析 Directions: In this section you are supposed to analyze the following cases from the perspective of intercultural communication. Then write down the answers on the Answer Sheet. A female neurologist from Beijing was working on a research project in a Toronto hospital. She shared a small office with a young Canadian male from a large family, who loved peanut butter. He was so fond of peanut butter that he kept a jar in the office. One day he came into the office and exclaimed, “Who took my peanut butter?” But the Chinese woman immediately felt accused. After all, there were only two of them in the office. She was deeply distressed, but true to her learned cultural behavior of never showing anger in public, she said nothing. Later that day she was working in a room where the physiotherapist was treating a patient who suffered paralysis of his legs and arms from a motorcycle accident. The physiotherapist moved one of the patient’s legs in a way that caused him pain. “Ouch!” he cried. “Oh, I didn’t do that,” said the physiotherapist. “It was that doctor over there,” and he pointed to the Chinese woman. “How could she have done it since she’s on the other side of the room?” the patient pointed out. “Ah, she has three hands.” the physiotherapist replied. At these words the Chinese doctor became even more upset. She was so disturbed that she behaved in a way uncharacteristic of her culture. She waited until the patient had gone, and then said to the physiotherapist, “I’m very upset by what you said.” The physiotherapist was taken aback. “What had I said?” “You said I had three hands,” the Chinese doctor finally choked. “You think I took the peanut butter.” 1. How do you understand the phrase “to have three hands”? 2. What caused their communication conflicts?
