听力原文: Hi, there. Let me make a brief introduction of the brain first.

The brain tells the other parts of the body what to do. We think with our brain. We understand the world around us with our brain. However, doctors don't know much about how the brain works. Doctors can do many things with other parts of the body.

They can give a person a new heart. They can put an arm back on 'after it has been cut off. It is easy to study some parts of the body. However, it is difficult to know how the brain works. It is most difficult to work on a brain. If the brain is without enough blood for three to five minutes, the brain dies. So when doctors work on the brain, they only have three to five minutes to do their work] Doctors try new things on the brain, but they must be very careful. The brain is the center of those things that make us what we are.

Which of the following can't doctors do?

A.They can give a person a new heart.

B.They can give a person a new brain.

回答下列各题: A Plumper How does the countrys economy compare with those of the EU? Some of the concerns surrounding Turkeys application to join the European Union, to be voted on by the EUs Council of Ministers on December 17th, are economic - in particular, the countrys relative poverty. Its GDP per head is less than a third of the average for the 15 pre-2(X)4 members of the EU. But it is not far off that of one of the ten new members which joined on May 1 st 2(X)4 (Latvia), and it is much the same as those of two countries, Bulgaria and Romania, which this week concluded accession talks with the EU that could make them full members on January 1st 2007. B Furthermore, the countrys recent economic progress has been, according to Donald Johnston, the secretary-general of the OECD, stunning. GDP in the second quarter of the year was 13. 4% higher than a year earlier, a rate of growth that no EU country comes close to matching. Turkeys inflation rate has just fallen into single figures for the first time since 1972, and this week the country reached agreement with the IMF on a new three-year, $10 billion economic programme that will, according to the IMFs managing director, Rodrigo Rato, help Turkey reduce inflation toward European levels, and enhance the economys resilience. C Resilience has not historically been the countrys economic strong point. As recently as 2001, GDP fell by over 7%. It fell by more than 5% in 1994 and by just under 5% in 1999. Indeed, throughout the 1990s growth oscillated like an electrocardiogram recording a violent heart attack. This irregularity has been one of the main reasons (along with red tape and corruption) why the country has failed dismally to attract much-needed foreign direct investment. Its stock of such investment (as a percentage of GDP) is lower now than it was in the 1980s, and annual inflows have scarcely ever reached $1 billion (whereas Ireland attracted over $25 billion in 2003, as did Brazil in every year from 1998 to 2000). D One deterrent to foreign investors is due to disappear on January 1st 2005. On that day, Turkey will virtually take away the right of every one of its citizens to call themselves a millionaire. Six noughts will be removed from the face value of the lira; one unit of the local currency will henceforth be worth what 1 m are nowi. e. , about 0. 53 ($ 0.70). Goods will have to be priced at both the new and old lira for the whole of the year, but foreign bankers and investors can begin to look forward to a time in Turkey when they will no longer have to juggle mentally with indeterminate strings of zeros. Turkey’s economy grows faster than any EU member now.

Scientists say that something very serious is happening to the earth. It will begin to get 56 in the following years. There will be major changes in 57 in the new century.

Coastal waters will have a 58 temperature. This will have a 59 effect on agriculture. In northern areas, the 60 season will be ten days longer by the year 2010. However, in warmer areas, it will be too dry. The 61 of water could 62 by eighty percent. This would 63 a large decrease in agriculture production.

World temperature could 64 two degrees centigrade by the year 2040. How-ever, the increase could be three times as great in the Arctic and Antarctic areas. This could cause the 65 sheets to melt and raise the 66 of the oceans 67 one to two meters. Many coastal cities would be 68 water.

Why is this happening? There is too 69 carbon dioxide in the air. 70 oil, gas and coal burn, they create large amounts of carbon dioxide. This carbon dioxide lets 71 enter the earth's atmosphere and 72 the earth. However, it doesn't let as much heat 73 the atmosphere and enter space. It's like a blanket. The heat

74 the sun can pass through the blanket to warm the earth. The heat 75 there and can't escape through the blanket again.

Earthquake

How does an earthquake start?

What makes an earthquake happen? The rock of the earth's crust (地壳) may have a 'fault', a kind of break in the surface. The blocks which make up the earth move, and sometimes this may cause the sides of the fault to move up and down or lengthways (纵向地) against each other. When one piece of rock starts to rub on another with great force, a lot of energy is used. This energy is changed into vibrations (振动) and it is these vibrations that we feel as an earthquake. The vibrations can travel thousands of kilometers and so an earthquake in Turkey may be felt in Greece.

What to do during an earthquake?

At school

As soon as the earthquake starts, students should get under the desks immediately and wait until the teacher tells them it is safe to come out. The teacher should, at the same time, go immediately to the teacher's desk, get underneath (在......下面) it and stay there till the danger is over. Students must not argue with the teacher or question instructions. As soon as the tremors (震动) stop, all students should walk towards the exit and go straight to the school playground or any open space such as a square or a park. They must wait there until the teacher tells them it is safe to go.

At home

If you are at home when the earthquake occurs, get immediately under the table in the living room or kitchen. Choose the biggest and strongest table you can find. You must not go anywhere near the window and don't go out onto the balcony (阳台). Once the tremors have stopped, you can come out from under the table but you must leave the building straight away. You should walk down the stairs and should not use the lift - there may be a power cut as a result of the earthquake and you could find yourself trapped inside the lift for hours.

In the street

If you are in. the street when the earthquake takes place, do not stand near buildings, fences or walls - move away as quickly as possible and try to find a large open space to wait in. Standing under trees could also be dangerous.

People knew long ago how an earthquake starts.

A.Right

B.Wrong
