Last year, I went WWOOFing (Willing Workers on Organic Farms) at a beautiful organic farm in La Réunion. With WWOOFing, volunteers exchange their time and work for food and accommodation. I slept in a cabin in the woods with hedgehogs(刺猬) digging about in the bushes, all different coloured birds singing in the morning and endless rows of palm trees offering shade from the sun.
For me, one of the best ways to get to know a new place is to work with the land, live with the locals and share meals together. This is why I absolutely love WWOOFing. It has got to be one of the best ways to travel. It is a mutually beneficial exchange where everyone involved prioritises people and environment above profit. You get the time and space to deepen a connection with local communities and nature.
There is a lot to learn and each farm has its own unique way of doing things, depending on the environment, climate and soil. At the farm in La Réunion we planted palm trees to harvest the core of the trunk which can be eaten in salads. Before staying with the farm I had only eaten heart of palm from cans which were nothing in comparison to the real thing, fresh from the ground. When potting up the very beginnings of the palm trees, I felt grateful to be a part of the start of the trees&39; cycle. I was filled with awe that something so small could grow into something so big and strong.
We also did lots of weeding, which helped me to get to know all kinds of different plants, to be able to identify which ones we could use as herbs/medicine/in salads and which were seen as uneatable. I also got to harvest pineapples and guava fruit(番石榴) to make jams which will be sold at the local market.
Of course, not everyone is able to travel far away into the field. The great thing about the skill-share philosophy behind WWOOFing is that it’s something we can all do from our own backyard. The focus shifts from money to how we can best support each other in our communities.
A fair exchange can make a big difference in the world.

M: Of course! That's the reason I'm going to Chicago. Hi! My name's Barney Miller. What's your name?
W: Jenny Lin. I'm a sales representative for Woofers, based in Taiwan. Are you looking forward to the exhibition?
M: Huh, I've been waiting to go to the show for more than three months. There are going to be companies from over forty different countries there.
W: I know. I'm really looking forward to seeing what new products will be on the market next year.
M: I'm more interested in the new discoveries, which are being made in the electronics industry.
W: Really? Do you mind if I ask what part of the electronics industry you're in?
M: Not at all. I work in the Research and Development Department of a company based in Los-Angeles. We specialize in designing printers.
W: What's the name of your company? Maybe I've heard of it.
M: I don't think so. We're just a little company called "Sunrise".
W: Hmm. Oh, didn't you come out with an amazingly small but strong high-tech printer at the exhibition last year in New York?
M: Yeah, that turned out to be our best seller of the year, but everyone forgets our name.
W: One of my jobs is to look for the products that will be the most successful, and then find out why. So I don't just remember the big companies.
M: I like the way you think, Jenny. Would you like to get together for dinner when we arrive in Chicago, so we can talk more about this?

There are a number of reasons for the widespread dissatisfaction with college. Although most Americans surveyed by Pew feel doubtful about the value of a college degree,an overwhelming majority of parents Pew surveyed still expect their children to go to college."It call be inferred that the increased doubt has not significantly influenced decision making." In our first sentence we suggested that fear ought to be properly used. If, for example, you never go out of your house because of the danger of being knocked down and killed in the street by a car, you are letting fear rule you too much. Even in your house you are not absolutely safe: an airplane may crash on your house, or ants may eat away some of the beams in your roof so that the latter falls on you, or you may get cancer!
The important thing is not to let fear rule you, but instead to use fear as your servant and guide. Fear will warn you of dangers; then you have to decide what action to take. In many cases, you can take quick and successful action to avoid the danger. For example, you see a car coming straight towards you; fear warns you, you jump out of the way, and all is well.
In some cases, however, you decide that there is nothing that you can do to avoid the danger. For example, you cannot prevent an airplane crashing onto your house. In this case, fear has given you its warning; you have examined it and decided on your course, of action, so fear of this particular danger is no longer of any use to you, and you have to try to overcome it.
Children would play with fire until their hands were burnt away if ______.
A.they were given no warning beforehand
B.they had never burnt themselves
C.they had no sense of pain
D.they were fearful of the fire
