Natural-gas Vehicles

"Although he wasn't referring to cars, his observation seems particularly appropriate for the auto industry today: designing, developing and marketing "green" cars has not been an easy task, which is why gasoline-powered vehicles still rule the world and fossil fuels still account for almost 75 percent of the world's energy consumption. As gasoline soar and concern over harmful emission mounts, however, cars that run on alternate fuel sources will become increasingly important. A natural-gas vehicle, or NGV, is the perfect example of such a car -- it's fuel-efficient, environmentally friendly and offers a relatively low cost of ownership. Natural gas basics

The word" gas" is a confusing term because it is used to describe many different substances that are similar but not exactly the same. For example, the" gas" you put in your car is gasoline, one component of crude oil, or petroleum. Petroleum is a dark, sticky liquid mixture of compounds formed underground by the decay of ancient marine animals.

Natural gas also comes from the decay of ancient organisms, but it naturally takes a gaseous form. instead of a liquid form. Natural gas commonly occurs in association with crude oil. It is derived from both land plants and aquatic (水生的) organic matter and forms above or below oil deposits. It is often dissolved in crude oil at the high pressures existing in a reservoir. There are also reservoirs of natural gas, known as non-associated gas, that contain only gas and no oil.

Natural gas consists primarily of methane (沼气) and other hydrocarbon gases. Hydrocarbons are organic compounds composed only of the elements carbon and hydrogen. The hydrocarbons in natural gas are called saturated hydrocarbons (饱和烃) because they contain hydrogen and carbon bound together by single bonds.

Like gasoline, natural gas is combustible (易燃的) ,which means it can be used in a combustion engine like gasoline. But cars that could burn natural gas didn't appear on the scene until the 1930s.

From field to ford

We extract natural gas trapped in underground reservoirs by drilling wells into the earth. A modem well, equipped with diamond-studded drill bits, can drill to depths approaching 25,000 feet.

Throughout the 19th century, the use of natural gas remained localized because there was no way to transport large quantities of gas over long distances. In 1890, the invention of a leakproof pipeline coupling made it possible to transport gas miles from the source. Improvements in pipeline technology continued over the next two decades until long-distance gas transmission became practical. From 1927 to 1931, laborers constructed more than 10 major natural gas transmission systems in the United States, making natural gas a viable energy source for many applications. The oil shortages of the late 1960s and early 1970s brought renewed interest in natural gas as a fuel source, especially for automobiles.

Today, owners of natural-gas vehicles can fill up their cars at one of 1,300 fueling stations located in the United States. Honda also offers a personal natural gas pump to people who purchase its natural-gas-powered Civic. The pump uses a home's existing natural gas lines and can be installed for＄500 to ＄1,500.

The Shy Architect

Casting about for someone to run a big family firn when a successful tyrant is due to retire is usually a troublesome business. When the firm is still controlled by the same family that founded it back when John D. Rockefeller was gobbling up refineries in Cleveland, it becomes still more daunting. Add the fact that the ruling family is Parsees, a small Zoroastrian sect who have been intermarrying in India for over a thousand years, and the odds of finding someone who is up to the job lengthen again.

The "individualist" or" loner"

Yet after indifferent early reviews, Ratan Tata has transformed the Tata group, of which he is chairman. When he took over from his uncle, J. R. D. Tata, it was a troublesome conglomerate(企业集团) with stakes in a huge collection of companies that seemed likely to wither in the face of foreign competition. Now it makes foreign acquisitions and ventures into unfamiliar markets. Tata Steel's bidding war with CSN, a Brazilian firm, over Corus, an Anglo-Dutch steelmaker, is just one example of the once-staid group's new boldness. Mr. Tara was recently voted Indian of the year by viewers of an Indian television channel, beating both Sachin Tendulkar, India's greatest cricketer, and Aishwarya Rai, the country's most famous screen goddess. And he has succeeded partly because he is what his friends call an individualist, and others might call a loner.

Mr. Tata does hot like publicity and avoids the platforms and applause of conferences. He lives frugally, does not drink or smoke and seems baffled by the idea of time spent not working. Asked what he would do with it, he usually replies that he would walk his dog along the beach near Mumbai. He does not seem to be motivated by money, and talks constantly about fairness and doing the right thing. "I want to be able to go to bed at night and say that I haven't hurt anybody." Mr. Tara says twice in the course of an interview at a hotel in New Delhi owned by the sprawling group.

Mr. Tata became chairman in 1991, just as India's economy was opening up. His uncle, who had run Tata for more than 50 years, had started Tata Airlines (which became Air India) and was to India what Gianni Agnelli of Fiat was to Italy. He was a good-looking philanthropist (慈善家) with a French wife and held the first pilot's licence to be issued in India. His shy and unglamorous nephew, in contrast, trained as an architect at Cornell University, joined quietly into the family firm and was not marked out for the succession even when his: uncle was due to retire.

Despite all the glory that surrounded J. R. D., when he retired in 1991, Tata was a group of companies ill-equipped to deal with the changes about to sweep through India. It earned most of its money in old-fashioned industries that had grown fat during the centrally planned" licence raj", when the government set limits on how much firms were allowed to produce and protected them from foreign competitors.

The stakes held by the family in many of the 300-odd companies in the group were tiny, and the main Tata businesses were run as independent fiefs by men much older than Mr. Tata. She confirms that Chinese and Japanese are now the two most studied Asian language

French junior student Beida is totally fluent in Chinese. "I'm learning Chinese because I want to be an international lawyer in China," he explains.

Young French entrepreneur Patric Penia established his Beiyan Consultancy Company in Paris, and it now works together with China Central Television in introducing French traditions and culture to Chinese audiences. Patric also cooperated with Beijing's University of Finance and Economics and Central University of Finance and Economics in launching a three-week crash course in Chinese in Beijing. In 2005, he initiated the "Chinese people and business management" training course in Paris, which consists of seminars to help French businessmen understand how Chinese business operates.

Germany has also caught on to the benefits of Chinese language learning, and has added Chinese to its high school graduation exams. Many international corporations also hold introductory Chinese courses for employee's assigned work in China. "English isn't enough," says Herr Gerck, president of Siemens China, "We need to equip our staff with the ability to deal with Chinese merchants in their own language."

In Britain, a Chinese teaching program that will form. part of the national curriculum has been formulated and approved by the Department of Education and Skills. In the U. S. , Chinese is part of the Advance Placement Program for American high school students. This means that students can take college-level Chinese in the same way as they learn French, Spanish and German and gain credits if they get good test results. More than 2,500 primary and high schools now offer AP courses in the Chinese language.
