第1题
In a great many cities, hundreds of people ride bicycles to work every day. In New York City, some bike riders have even formed a group called Bike for a Better City. They claim that if more people rode bicycles to work there would be fewer automobiles in the downtown section of the city and therefore less dirty air from car engines.
For several years this group has been trying to get the city government to help bicycle riders: For example, they want the city to draw bicycle lanes on some of the main streets, because when bike riders must use the same lanes as cars, there are accidents. Bike for a Better City feels that if there were special lanes more people would use bikes.
But no bicycle lanes have been drawn. Not everyone thinks it is a good idea--they say it will slow traffic. Some store owners on the main streets say that if there is less traffic, they will have less business. And most people live too far from downtown to travel by bike.
The city government has not yet decided what to do. It wants to keep everyone happy. Only on weekends, Central Park is closed to cars, and the roads may be used by bicycles only. But Bike for a Better City says that this is not enough and keeps fighting to get bicycle lanes downtown.
According to the passage, bicycles ______.
A.are more convenient than cars
B.are safer traffic tools than cars
C.are ridden by most people in U.S.
D.are the solution to some city problems

Twelve years ago, oceanographer Captain Charles Moore was skippering his yacht the Alguita in the North Pacific. He sailed into a mass of floating plastic rubbish which took him and his crew a week to cross. This floating rubbish dump is now called the Great Pacific Garbage Patch and doubles the size of the USA.
The United Nations says there are now 18,000 pieces of plastic in every square kilometre of sea everywhere in the world. A walk along any beach will give you some idea of the seriousness of plastic pollution.
The trouble is, when we throw out plastic with the trash, the plastic doesn"t go away. Plastic does not biodegrade. It photo degrades into smaller and smaller particles which then enter the food chain.
Plastics contain cancer-causing chemicals along the food chain in increasing concentrations and end up in our fish and chips, along with hormone disruptors. Scientists try to tell us that we are killing ourselves as well as other animals. At least 200 species are, as I speak, being killed by plastic.
Whales, dolphins, turtles and albatross confuse floating plastic, especially shopping bags and six pack rings, with jellyfish.
Some countries have rebelled and banned plastic bags. And the first was brave Bangladesh. Then China took the same decision. Botswana, Canada, Israel, Kenya, Rwanda, Singapore and South Africa have also banned plastic bags. Notice how many of the world"s richest countries are not on this list. It"s an absolute disgrace.
Think globally, act locally. A small Australian town is now one step ahead of the rest of the world. The inhabitants of Bundanoon in New South Wales have banned plastic bottles from the town.
We need to follow their example and eliminate plastic from our lives, take care of the earth and vote for people we think will do the same.
The writer says that we can get an idea of how much plastic rubbish there is in the oceans by________. 查看材料
A.looking at the sea
B.travelling across the USA
C.sailing across the Pacific
D.taking a walk along any beach

Another way is energy conservation ( 节能 ), which means using energy more efficiently ( 有效地 ). In some very cold countries people build special houses to save energy. They place materials between the inside and the outside of the walls of the house to keep the cold out and the warmth in. The house is heated by the lights, the body heat of the people and the other equipment in it.
Finally, renewable energy sources are used even though they are often expensive to develop. One form. of these is geothermal energy. In certain parts of the world the temperature of the earth increases thirty degrees centigrade with each kilometer down. At six kilometers, therefore, it rises to nearly two hundred degrees. To get the heat, water is pumped ( 压;抽 ) down into the rocks and back up to the surface. Heat from the earth is already used in certain countries.
1、How many ways of dealing with the energy problem are discussed in the text? ( )
A、Two.
B、Three.
C、Four.
D、Five.
2、From the text we learn that coal( ).
A、is quite easy to produce
B、is not used most efficiently
C、is the most common source of energy
D、could be renewed only by new technology
3、The writer tells about the "special houses" because they( ).
A、show the excellent skills of the builders
B、serve as an example of energy conservation
C、are heated by different sources of energy
D、are warmer than other types of houses
4、The underlined words "geothermal energy" in the third paragraph mean ( ).
A、renewable source
B、 underground source
C、 heat inside the earth
D、 temperature of the earth
5、At a place where the surface temperature is 15°C, how deep do you have to dig so as to get a temperature of 75 °C ? ( )
A、One km.
B、 Two km.
C、 Three km.
D、 Four km
