The evolution of speech may have been the most important factor of all. When early man mastered the loom (工具) of language, his progress accelerated dramatically. Through the spoken word a new invention in tool-malting, for example, could be communicated to everyone; in this way the innovativeness of the individual enhanced the survival prospects of his fellows, and the creative strength of one became the strength of all. More important, through language the ideas of one generation could be passed on to the next, so that each generation inherited not only the genes of its ancestors but also their collective wisdom, transmitted through the magic of speech. A million years ago, when this magic was not yet perfected and language was a cruder art, those bands of men who possessed the new gift in the highest degree were strongly favored in the struggle for existence. But the fabric of speech is woven out of many threads. The physical attributes of a voice bow, lips, an tongue were among the necessary traits; but a good brain was also essential, to frame. an abstract thought or represent an object by a word.

Now the law of the survival of the fittest began to work on the population of early men, Steadily, the physical apparatus for speech improved. At the same time, the center of the brain devoted to speech grew in size and complexity, and in the course of many generations the whole brain grew with them. Once more, as with the use of tools, reciprocal forces came into play in which speech stimulated better brains, and brains improve the art of speech, and the curve of brain growth spiraled upward.

Which factor played the most important role in the evolution of human intelligence? Was it the most pressure of the Ice-Age climate? Or tools? Or language? No one can tell; all worked together, through Darwin's law of natural selection, to produce the dramatic increase in the size of the brain that has been recorded in the fossil record in the last million years. The brain reached its present size about one hundred thousand years ago, and its growth ceased. Man's body had been shaped into its modern form. several hundred thousand years before that. Now brain and body were complete. Together they made a new and marvelous creature, charged with power, intelligence, and creative energy. His wits had been honed (磨砺) by the fight against hunger, cold, and the natural enemy; his form. had been molded in the crucible of adversity. In the annals of anthropology his arrival is celebrated by a change in name, from Homo erectus--the Man who stands erect--to Homo sapiens--the Man of wisdom.

What can be preceded according to the passage?

A.The evolution of the speech in the long run.

B.The time when early man mastered language

C.Description about the Ice-aged climate.

D.Other factors functioned in the evolution of human brains.

One busy day, I was racing around trying to get too much done, and I exclaimed to my three kids in the car, "We can get both things done and kill two birds with one stone!" My daughter Annie quietly suggested, "You mean feed two birds with one crumb, Mom, don't you?" I stopped short, realizing how steeped my language is in the culture of war. I had used "weapon" language without even knowing it. I was embarrassed and yet felt a grace: if a child can become conscious of using a new language of peace, then there is hope.

Think about the business language: strategies, bullets, high-caliber, power point; about win-lose sports language like "decimate", "attack", "destroy the other team", not to mention the movies and video games that simulate the most gruesome annihilations over and over. The lies of propaganda, one-sided media coverage, the alienation of others (those terrorists, the axis of evil), all part of the "collective psychic numbing" of our times. The biggest lie of all is that nuclear weapons are going to protect us. Nuclear weapons are an assault on our life, our planet, and on the Creator of the universe. It seems to afflict what our people could be as a result of the mess seeming too big to handle for the average person, disconnected and disempowered. When the world food programme for children equals 1/70th of the annual world military expense, we see what a crisis we are in.

Yet it inspired hope with the life examples of Mohandas Gandhi, Martin Luther King, Nelson Mandela, Mother Teresa, Oscar Romero and others. Each spiritual leader lived the maxim, "no justice, no peace," nonviolently insisting on the truth, speaking truth to power without harming others or stripping their dignity. Imagine if we focused on this commonality, rather than what divides us; imagine if religions and religious leaders promulgated a global culture of peace and tolerance. We do not have to feel overwhelmed; that U. N. structures, NGO documents, UNESCO declarations, peoples' ideas for education exist already, that the internet is a rich source of counterculture information, connectedness and hope. Of what use is a vote or medical care in a war-torn society? A culture of war is like a house of cards; the house can fall and give rise, like the phoenix, to a new culture of peace. There are three fundamental ways to build a culture of peace: understand, participate, communicate. I'll bet our children can think of 50 more, going out and waging peace.

How does the author feel about the current culture?

A.Gratified.

B.Ashamed.

C.Indignant.

D.Panicked.

I would like to apply for the post of Personnel Officer with Anglia Bank, as advertised in the Daily News on 19 October.

I have a BA in French from the University of London. I am following a part-time course in Personnel Management at the Oxford College of Management, and I hope to pass the Diploma in Personnel Management at the end of December.

When I left university, I worked for a year in a computer company near Cambridge. Then I moved back to London to work as a French teacher in a large school, where I stayed for two years. During this time, I did some part-time work as a language trainer with factory managers, which I very much enjoyed.

Three years ago, I joined Carter's Bank, where for the past year I have worked as Assistant Personnel Officer, dealing mainly with complaints from members of staff.

Having worked in a similar organisation to yours, I feel I am fully prepared for the challenges of this job.

Yours faithfully

Angela Varley

听力原文:M: We are having a debate on advertising Thursday evening, and I have to take part.

W: That's interesting. I should like to hear what people think about advertising.

M: What's there to say? We must have advertising, mustn't we?

W: Why?

M: Well, we wouldn't know what there was to buy if we didn't have advertisements.

W: Yes, that's true. Up to a point, advertisements provide information that we need. If someone has produced a new article, naturally, the seller wants to tell us about it.

M: Yes, and the advertisements tell us which product is the best.

W: Do they? I don't think so. Every manufacturer says that his product is the best, or at least tries to give the impres-sion. Only one can be the best, so the others are misleading, aren't they?

M: Well, in a way, I suppose, but we don't have to believe them, do we?

W: Are you saying that advertisements aren't effective? I don't think that intelligent businessmen will spend millions of dollars on advertising if nobody believes the advertisements, do you?

M: Perhaps not, but after all, it's their money that they are spending.

W: Is it? I think not. The cost of advertising is added to the price of the article. You and I and all the other people who buy the article pay for the advertising.

M: Well, I suppose we get something for our money, some information.

W: Yes, but don't forget it is often misleading information, and sometimes harmful.

M: Harmful?

W: What about the advertisements designed to persuade young people to smoke cigarettes? Wouldn't you say they are harmful?

M: You've given me a lot to think about. I'm quite looking forward to the debate now.

According to the woman, advertisements ______ .

A.let us know the best product

B.give us sufficient information

C.fail to convince people

D.give misleading information

听力原文: I read in the newspaper the other day that we tell between two hundred and three hundred lies every day. It makes me wonder if honesty is still important.

There are so many times when we just seem to expect people to be dishonest rather than honest. We expect individuals to try to take advantage of other people whenever they can. And we sometimes expect politicians not always to be honest in their dealings. And we even expect students, sometimes, to cheat on exams or to do things to help their scores. I wonder that if it's really fair to these people, because I still think there are honest people.

The other day a very good friend of mine and I were in a restaurant. When the cashier gave him back his money after we got out of the restaurant, he realized that he had ten or fifteen dollars more than he was supposed to have. He didn't even hesitate at all. He went right back in and gave it back, and of course, the cashier was very happy.

But, I was pleasantly surprised, because it means that there really are people running around who are honest.
