Stress may be defined as the response of the body to any demand. Whenever people experience something pleasant or unpleasant, we say they are under stress. We call the pleasant kind "eustress", the unpleasant kind "distress".

People sometimes compare our lives with that of the caveman (穴居人 who didn't worry about the stock market or the atomic bomb. They forget that the caveman worried about being eaten by a bear or about dying of hunger--things that few people worry about today. It's not that people suffer more stress today; it's just that they think they do.

It is inconceivable that anyone should have no stress at all. Most people who are ambitious and want to accomplish something live on stress. They need it. But excessive stress is by all means harmful. Worse, chronic exposure to stress over a long time may cause more serious diseases and may actually shorten your life.

The most frequent causes of distress in man are psychological lack of adaptability, not having a code of behavior. So the secret of coping with stress is not to avoid it, but to do what you like to do and what you are made to do, at your own rate. For most people, it is really a matter of learning how to behave in various situations. The most important thing is to have a code of life, to know how to live.

The modem man is suffering ______.

A.more stress than the caveman

B.less stress than caveman

C.different stress from the caveman

D.same stress as the caveman

Let us begin by saying what does not cause our dreams. Our dreams do not come from "another world". They are not messages from some outside source. They are not a look into the future, either.

All our dreams have something to do with our emotions, fears, longings, wishes, needs and memories. But something on the "outside" may affect what we dream. If a person is hungry, or tired, or cold, his dreams may include a feeling of this kind. If the covers on your body, such as a quilt or a blanket, have slipped off your bed, you may dream that you are sleeping or resting on the ice and snow. The material for the dream you will have tonight is likely to come from the experiences you have today.

So the subject of your dream usually comes from something that has influence on you while you are sleeping (feeling of cold, a noise, a discomfort, etc. ) and it may also use your past experience and the wishes and interests you have now. This is why very young children are likely to dream of fairies, older children of school examinations, hungry people of food, homesick soldiers of their families, and prisoners of freedom~ To show you how that is taking place while you are asleep and how your wishes or needs can all be joined together in a dream, here is the story of an experiment. A man was asleep and the back of his hand was rubbed with a piece of absorbent cotton(脱脂棉). He would dream that he was in a hospital and his charming girl friend was visiting him, sitting on the bed and feeling his hand gently!

There are some scientists who have made a special study of why we dream, what we dream and what those dreams mean. Their explanation of dreams, though a bit reasonable, is not accepted by everyone, but it offers an interesting approach to the problem. They believe that dreams are mostly expressions of wishes that did not come true. In other words, a dream is a way of having your wishes carried out.

From the passage we know our dreams______.

A.have nothing to do with our emotions and wishes

B.are simply messages from another world

C.are to some degree caused by stone of our feelings

D.are the prediction of our future life

In the old days, when a glimpse of stocking was looked upon as something far too shocking to distract the serious work of an off ice, secretaries were men.

Then came the First World War and the male secretaries were replaced by women. A man's secretary became his personal servant, charged with remembering his wife's birthday and buying her presents, taking his suits to the dry-cleaners, telling lies on the telephone to keep people he did not wish to speak to at bay, and, of course, typing and filing and taking shorthand.

Now all this may be changing again. The microchip and high technology is sweeping the British off ice, taking with it much of the routine clerical work that secretaries did.

"Once office technology takes over generally, the status of the job will rise again because it will involve only the high-powered work—and then men will want to do it again."

That was said by one of the executives (male) of one of the biggest secretarial agencies in this country. What he has predicted is already under way in the US.

Once high technology has made the job of secretary less routine, will there be a male takeover? Men should beware of (谨防) thinking that they can walk right into the better jobs. There are a lot of women secretaries who will do the job as well as them—not just because they can buy negligees (轻而薄的女晨衣) for the beas's wife, but because they are as efficient and well-trained to cope with word processors and computers, and men.

Before 1914 female secretaries were rare because they ______.

A.were less efficient than men

B.were not as serious as men

C.wore stockings

D.would have disturbed the other office workers
