听力原文: Frozen forever in time are memories of wire rimmed glasses and a grey sweater that almost always had chocolate covered raisins in the left pocket. Grandpapa always read to me. I'd sit beside him and listen.

When Grandpapa got old & couldn't see well enough to read anymore, I read to him. I'd read until his eyes closed and he started to fall asleep.

As I quietly got up, Grandpapa would reach into the pocket of his grey sweater and pull out a box of chocolate covered raisins, pressing them into my teen-aged hand. Eyes still closed, he would whisper "I remembered".

Grandpapa always said things like; "You scratch my back an' I'll scratch yours," and "Share, little one. Sharing makes everything better. ' Somehow, everything always was better.

I'll never forget the call from the hospital. Grandpapa had suffered a heart attack. My Mother was so upset, crying so many tears. It was snowing that night. Great big fluffy snowflakes falling through the glow of the streetlight.

It's snowing this morning, big fluffy snowflakes fall through the glow of the streetlight. I sit and watch the snowflakes fall, thinking about Grandpapa with love in my heart and a cup of coffee in my hands. I will always remember his wise words, "Sharing makes every thing better. ' The need to reach out to another human being is instinctive, and as necessary as the air that we breathe.

It is my sincere hope that you will want to share something of yourself. A kind word to a stranger perhaps, or a compliment to someone that deserves one. It is these small act a of sharing, and caring, that make this world a better place.

听力原文: Recently a group of 17-year-old schoolboys decided to beat the world basketball time record. They are to play for 90 hours and add 6 hours to the record. Now could 18 boys play for almost 4 days without stopping? The boys decided that each person would play for two and a half hours and then rest for two hours. They had to be able to sleep near the basketball hall, and they needed hot food and drink, day and night. Finally they started at 6 o' clock one evening.

The first night was very hard for the players. When it was their turn to rest, they were too excited to fall asleep at once. After sleeping for a short time, they had to play again. The nights were very long, when nobody was watching. The days were better, because plenty of people cheered the players' efforts. On the second night they fell asleep as soon as they stopped. Some of them had trouble with their hands and feet, but the only serious problem was a mental one. Each boy was thinking: What am I doing hero? How can I play any longer? After the third night the players knew they could finish the 90 hours. On the fourth night the play was very slow, but in the final hours it got better. For the last few minutes the players looked as fresh as when they started, they were tired, but very happy.

听力原文:Excuse me, I've been using this old book for a research project and I noticed tha
t a lot of pages are turning brown and becoming brittle.

Yes, unfortunately, that's a common problem with books made from wood pulp.

I suppose to make paper from wood that you have to add a lot of chemicals and acids to make it turn white.

Exactly and it's the acid that eventually eats away the paper.

Oh, that actually make sense, but this book's not even 75 years old and I've seen books in museum that are hundreds of years old and they're in fine condition.

Well, you see, books have been made from wood pulp only since 1850's, before that they were made from materials mostly animals' skins or C, no chemicals were added.

It's a shame those older wood pulp books are going to fall apart some day. Is there anything that can be done to preserve them.

En, currently the only way to stop the books from decaying is to remove the binding and treat each page individually to remove the acid.

That doesn't sound very economical.

No, it isn't. It's not practical to treat a large number of books with this process, so we only try to rescue the most valuable 1st edition books in our collection.

Well, thanks for the explanation. I'd better get back to my project.

Good luck, and I hope the old book hold long enough for you to finish it.

(31)

A.The early history of bookbinding.

B.How old books become valuable.

C.Economical ways to protect old books,

D.Why some books deteriorate.
