Today the ancient, ancestral wisdom of the hand has been largely replaced by the simple movement of the machine operator. Our glass and china, furniture, books, and textiles are almost entirely products of the machine. That machine-made goods can be well-designed and good-looking no one now denies; nevertheless, there are many who believe that if the old skills of hand-workers were to die out altogether, it would be a disaster.
Their arguments are, roughly, three. First, that the machine is by its nature a mass producer, and that objects made in ones and twos can be made better, even cheaper, by an individual craftsman than by a machine; secondly, that the human hand with relatively simple tools can produce objects of a quality permanently beyond the reach of the machine; thirdly, that it is not good for mankind if people lost the ability to create with their hands.

The cinema has learned a great deal from the theater about presentation. Gone are the
days when crowds were packed on wooden benches
in tumble-down buildings to gape the 【M1】______
antics of silent, jerking figures on the screen,
where some poor pianist made frantic efforts 【M2】______
to translate the dramas into music.

ventilated places where one can sit for comfort.
The projectionist has been trained to give 【M4】______
the audience time to prepare themselves for the film they are to see. Talk drops to a whisper
and then fades out together. As soon ad the cinema is in darkness,
spotlights are focused on 【M5】______
the curtains which are drawn slowly apart,
often to the accompany of music, to reveal the 【M6】______
title of the film. Everything has carefully
contrived so that the spectator will never actually 【M7】______
see the naked screen which will remind him all too sharply that what he is about to see is
nothing merely shadows flickering on a white board.
However much the cinema tries to 【M8】______
simulate the conditions in a theater,
it never fully succeeds. Nothing can equal to the awe and 【M9】______
sense of hushed expectation which is felt by
a theater audience as the curtain is slowly risen. 【M10】______

Everyone knows that human language can be a superb
means of communication. Therefore, it can be damnably 【M1】______
misleading, a barrier to people's understanding with each
other, and never more so than when names given for the
ease of classification are taken to mean more than they 【M2】______
do. If, for instance, they say that this man is white and 【M3】______
that man coloured, we say no more than truth as long 【M4】______
as we understand that we are speaking only of the colour
of the skin. We can also make neutral and honest
comments such as that "A" is above average height,
has little than the average intelligence, is red- 【M5】______
haired, is born in the north, and is left-handed. The
danger raises when we find other men who are white 【M6】______
or coloured, who are tall, stupid, red-haired, northerners,
or sinister. It is then we begin to correlate one fact with 【M7】______
another and to make assumptions about other characteristics,
which we believe are linked to the features we first observe.
So that when we talk about the white or the coloured, 【M8】______
we apt to imply and believe that each adjective tells us 【M9】______
more about the person in the question than it can. We 【M10】______
are making them into portmanteau words into which
we have packed our hopes, our wishes, our prejudices and our fears.

The balance of nature is a very elaborate and very delicate system of checks and counterchecks. It is continually being altered as climates change, as new organisms evolve, as animals or plants permeate to new areas. But tile alterations have in the past, for the most part, been slow, whereas with the arrival of civilized man, their speed has been multiplied manifold: from the evolutionary time-scale, where change is measured by periods of ten or a hundred thousand years, they have been transferred to the human time-scale in which centuries and even decades count.
Everywhere man is altering the balance of nature. He is facilitating the spread of plants and animals into new regions, sometimes deliberately, sometimes unconsciously. He is covering huge areas with new kinds of plants, or with houses, factories, slag-heaps and other products of his civilization. He exterminates some species on a large scale, but favors the multiplication of others. In brief, he has done more in five thousand years to alter the biological aspect of the planet than has nature in five million.
