Style, Not Fashion

Style. goes way beyond fashion: It is the distinctive way we put ourselves together. It is a unique blend of spirit and substance-personal identity imposed oil and created through the world of things. __________ (46) It is what people really want when they aspire to be fashionable. (if they aren&39;t just adorning themselves in status symbols).

Through clothes, were invent ourselves every time we get dressed. Our wardrobe is our visual vocabulary. Style. is our distinctive pattern of speech, our individual poetry.

Fashion is the least of it. Style. is, for starters, one part identity: self-awareness and self-knowledge.

__________ (47) And style. requires security-feeling at home in your body, physically and mentally. Of course, like all knowledge, self-knowledge must be updated as you grow evolve; style. takes ongoing self-assessment.

Style. is also one part personality: spirit: verve, attitude, wit, inventiveness. It demands the desire and confidence to express whatever mood one wishes. Such variability is not only necessary but a reflection of a person&39;s unique complexity as a human being. __________ (48) In order to work, style. must reflect the real self, the character and personality of the individual; anything less appears to be a costume?

Lastly, style. is one part fashion. It&39;s possible to have lots of clothes and not an ounce of style.

But it&39;s also possible to have very few clothes and lots of style. Yes, fashion is the means through which we express style, but it takes fewer clothes to be stylish than you might imagine.

Whatever else it is, style. is optimism made visible. Style. presumes that you are a person of interest: that the world is a place of interest that life is worth making the effort for. It also shows that you are morally responsible. It shows that you don&39;t buy things at the whim of the marketplace or the urging of marketers. __________ (49) Style. exposes people&39;s ambivalence over good looks.

It always demonstrates that appearances do count. Deep down we suspect this, since we ourselves make judgments about others from how they look.

No one should be penalized for not having style, of course, but those who have it are distinctive and thus more memorable. __________ (50) They announce to the world that they are in command of themselves.

根据短文内容,回答题。

Schooling and Education

It is commonly believed in the United States that school is where people go to get an education.

Nevertheless, it has been said that today children interrupt their education to go to school. The distinction between schooling and education implied by this remark is important.

Education is much more open-ended and all-inclusive than schooling. Education knows no limits. It can take place anywhere, whether in the shower or in the job, whether in a kitchen or in a theatre. It includes both the formal learning that takes place in schools and the whole universe of informal learning. The agents of education can range from a respected grandparent to the people debating politics on the radio, from a child to a distinguished scientist. Whereas schooling has a certain predictability, education quite often produces surprises. A chance conversation with a stranger may lead a person to discover how little is known of other religions. People are engaged in education from infancy (婴儿期)on. Education, then, is a very broad, inclusive term. It is a lifelong(一生的) process, a process that starts long before the start of school, and one that should be an integral (基本的 ) part of one&39;s entire life.

Schooling, on the other hand, is a specific, formalized process, whose general pattern varies little from one setting to the next. Throughout a country, children arrive at school at approximately the same time, take assigned (指定的) seats, are taught by an adult, use similar textbooks, do homework, take exams, and so on. The slices of reality that are to be learned, whether they are words or an understanding of the working of government, have usually been limited by the boundaries of the subject being taught. For example, high school students know that they are not likely to find out in their classes the truth about political problems in their communities or what the newest filmmakers are experimenting with. There are definite conditions surrounding the formalized process of schooling.

Which of the following is true according to the author? 查看材料

A.School is the place where people get informal education

B.Education means schooling

C.Education can be both formal and informal

D.Going to school is the only way to receive education

根据短文的内容,回答下列题目

Life at Aichi University

I&39;m Yamamoto Mika, a 22-year old Japanese girl. I&39;d like to invite you to Aichi University so you can understand my life.

Our university has a close relationship with China and my department is the only one of its kind in Japan. My courses include the Chinese language, modem Chinese politics and economics. I love the Chinese culture and I have been to Tianjin as an exchange student.

In Japan, our courses are divided into compulsory, optional and specialized courses. However,we have a flexible schedule. We can choose classes from a wide range of options.

Many students finish the compulsory courses in three years so that they can have one year without any classes. They often use this period of time to study abroad, conduct research and travel.

Many students even suspend their study for additional study-abroad opportunities.

Japanese universities encourage students to choose their own ways of study, so it is quiet easy for us to apply for study suspension.

Japanese students participate in various kinds of extracurricular activities. They attend clubs from elementary schools, so many have already been accustomed to clubs when they enter university.

Our university now has 42 art clubs and 45 sports clubs. The annual University Festival is the grandest carnival of Japanese universities. In the festival, students promote their clubs and organize various activities. Our university&39;s festival attracted about 150,000 people last year. I really like this festival.

In school, I participate in the journalism club. When we have the club promotion, we cook "tonnjiru", a kind of pork soup, and sell it to other students at the fair.

We also go to different places to interview celebrities who attend our festival as guests. It is a wonderful experience to talk to those stars face to face.

Japanese students like to hold parties. We have two kinds of parties. One is the Mochiyori party. If you want to attend this party you have to cook a course and take it to the party. The organizer buys drinks and snacks.

Another kind of party is the Nomikai, which mainly involves alcohol. We drink something called chu-hai, which is a combination of soda and wine. We also drink Japanese sake and beer.

There are parties for many occasions, like welcoming new students, graduation, celebrating victories, birthday parties or just for promoting friendship.

The Changing Middle Class

The United States perceives itself to be a middle-class nation. However, middle class is not a real designation, nor does it carry privileges. It is more of a perception, which probably was as true as it ever could be right after World War II. The economy was growing, more and more people owned their own homes, workers had solid contracts with the companies that employed them, and nearly everyone who wanted a higher education could have one. Successful people enjoyed upward social mobility. They may have started out poor, but they could become rich. Successful people also found that they had greater geographic mobility. In other words, they found themselves moving to and living in a variety of places.

The middle class collectively holds several values and principles. One strong value is the need to earn enough money to feel that one can determine one&39;s own economic fate. In addition,middle-class morality embraces principles of individual responsibility, importance of family, obligations to others, and believing in something outside oneself.

But in the 1990s those in the middle class found that there was a price for success. A U. S.News & World Report survey in 1994 indicated that 75 percent of Americans believed that middle-class families could no longer make ends meet. Both spouses now worked, as did some of the children;long commutes became routine; the need for child care put strains on the family; and public schools were not as good as they once were. Members of the middle class were no longer financing their lifestyles through earnings but were using credit to stay afloat. The understanding of just what middle class meant was changing.

The information in this passage deals with__________. 查看材料

A.an individual

B.a social and economic group

C.apolitical organization

(2) Born in Queens, New York in 1908, Lauder was the daughter of a Hungarian mother and a Czech father.

(4) In 1953, the company introduced its first perfume (香水), Youth Dew, the first of a range of fragrances that has now grown to more than 70. They include: Aramis, a line of products for men, launched in 1964; and Clinique, a range of odourless (无臭的) cosmetics, which followed in 1968.

(5) By the time she retired in 1995, Lauder was presiding over a multibillion-dollar enterprise, which now ranks number 349 in the Fortune 500 list of largest US companies. 请根据短文的内容,回答题。

The Need to Remember

Some people say they have no memory at all: "I just can&39;t remember a thing!" But of course we all have a memory. Our memory tells us who we are. Our memory helps us to make use in the present of what we have learnt in the past.

In fact we have different types of memory. For example, our visual memory helps us recall facts and places. Some people have such a strong visual memory, they can remember exactly what they have seen, for example, pages of a book, as a complete picture.

Our verbal ( 言语的 ) memory helps us remember words and figures we may have heard but not seen or written: items of a shopping list, a chemical formula, dates, or a recipe.

With our emotional memory, we recall situations or places where we had strong feelings, perhaps of happiness or unhappiness. We also have special memories for smell, taste, touch and sound, and for performing physical movements.

We have two ways of storing any of these memories: our short-term memory stores items for up to thirty seconds- enough to remember a telephone number while we dial. Our long-term memory, on the other hand, may store items for a lifetime. Older people in fact have a much better long-term memory than short-term. They may forget what they have done only a few hours ago, but have the clearest remembrance (记忆) of when they were very young.

Psychologists tell us that we only remember a few facts about our past, and that we invent the rest. It is as though we remember only the outline of a story. We then make up the details. We often do this in the way we want to remember them, usually so that we appear as the heroes of our own past-- or maybe victims needing sympathy ( 同情 ).

Visual memory helps us recall a place we have been to. 查看材料
