听力原文: The cigarette industry began in the 1870s with the development of the cigarette manufacturing machine. This made it possible to produce great numbers of cigarettes very quickly, and it reduced the price.

Today cigarette smoking is a widespread habit. About 43 percent of the adult men and 31 percent of the adult women in the United States smoke cigarettes regularly. It is encouraging to note, however, that millions of people have given up the smoking habit. 75 percent of the male population have smoked cigarettes at some time during their lives, but the number of persons who have given up smoking is increasing.

Men as a group smoke more than women. Among both men and women the age group with the highest proportion of smokers is the age group of 24-44.

第6题

Americans smoke six thousand million cigarettes every year, that is, every person smokes a
bout 4,195 cigarettes a year in the country of 18 years of age or more. It has been calculated that 51% of American men smoke while 34% of American women do so.

Since 1939, scientific studies have shown that smoking does great harm to one's health and it will shorten one's life.

Cigarette smoking is believed, by most research workers in the field, a very important cause in the development of the cancer of the lungs and the cancer of the throat and is believed to have much to do with some other kinds of cancers. Cigarette smokers suffer from the illness of the heart more often than those who don't smoke. But strange, yet true, women are thought to be less affected, because when women smoke, they usually don't breathe in the smoke so deeply. Most of doctors and researchers say, "Give up smoking. If you don't smoke--don't start!"

Filters (过滤嘴) are required now to make smoking a bit safer, but they can only reduce, not get rid of, its poison.

But there are still a number of doctors and research workers who are less sure of the effect of cigarette smoking on health. They believe that the cancers of the lungs, the throat and so on may also be caused by air pollution, or chemical poison that is now being used by farmers in large quantities to destroy plant pests and small animals.

______each smoke about 4,195 cigarettes a year.

A.Americans

B.American men

C.American women

D.American aged 18 or more

Section B

Directions: In this section, you will hear 3 short passages. At the end of each passage, you will hear some questions. Both the passage and the questions will be spoken only once. After you hear a question, you must choose the best answer from the four choices marked A, B, C and D.

听力原文: Today, cigarette smoking is a widespread habit. About forty-three percent of the adult men and thirty-one percent of the adult women in the United States smoke cigarettes regularly. It is encouraging to note, however, that millions of people have given up the smoking habit. Seventy- five percent of the male population and forty-six percent of the female population have smoked cigarettes at some time during their lives, but twenty-six percent of these men and eleven percent of the women have stopped smoking. The number of people who have given up smoking is increasing.

Men as a group smoke more than women. Among both men and women, the age group with the highest proportion of smokers is the age group 24-44.

Income, education, and occupation all play a part in determining a person's smoking habits. City people smoke more than people living on farms. Well-educated men with high incomes are less likely to smoke cigarettes than men with fewer years of schooling and lower incomes. On the other hand, if a well-educated man with a higher income smokes at all, he is likely to smoke more packs of cigarettes per day.

The situation is somewhat different for women. There are slightly more smokers among women with higher family incomes and higher education than among the lower-income and lower-education groups. These more highly educated women tend to smoke more heavily.

Among teenagers, the picture is similar. There are fewer teenaged smokers from upper-income, well-educated families, and fewer from families living in farm areas. High school students who are preparing for college are less likely to smoke than those who do not plan to continue their education after high school. Children are most likely to start smoking if one or both of their parents smoke.

(27)

A.Well-educated men with high incomes are generally less likely to smoke.

B.City people are less likely to smoke.

C.People in rural areas are more likely to smoke.

D.Men with higher incomes tend to smoke fewer packs per day.

Questions are based on the following passage.

If you smoke--particularly cigarettes--you are far more likely than a non-smoker to suffer or die from several major diseases--notably lung cancer.

One smoker in four dies prematurely (过早地) because of his smoking. The risk of dying for a heavy smoker (between the ages of 35 and 55) is roughly equal to the risk run by a non-smoker 10 years older.

Cigarette smoking--and to a lesser degree pipe and cigar smoking-may aggravate(使恶化)or be partly responsible for the development of a wide variety of other diseases, which include

cancers of the mouth and throat, peptic ulcers (胃溃疡), and loss of teeth.

(78) Women who smoke during pregnancy produce babies on average about 5 to 8 ounces lighter than those who don&39;t.

Take lung cancer for example:

Britain&39;s lung cancer figures are the highest in the world, and still rising. Ninety people die every day, 33,000 in 1969. Almost all these deaths can be attributed directly to tobacco smoking.

(79)The prospects of a cure for lung cancer are, at present, remoter ,and it is impossible to estimate when, if ever, someone will find one. You would be foolish to rely on someone finding a cure before you needed it.

One man in eight who die between the ages of 35 and 64 is killed by lung cancer. The figures for women in this age group are lower, about 1 in 20. This is partly because women smoke less, and have not smoked as long. But the figures are still very high.

According to the passage, lung cancer __________ 查看材料

A.is the major cause of death between the ages of 35 and 55

B.is most often caused by smoking

C.never affects non-smokers

D.has nothing to do with smoking
