Are You a Successful Leader?

1. Almost nothing we do in this word is done in isolation. At work or at play, you’ll find yourself in groups, working with other people: your team at work, a meeting with colleagues, your family, a holiday with friends, a group of students working together, a day out walking in the mountains, a group of neighbors wanting to make changes. It is now recognized that being able to work successfully with other people is one of the major keys to success. Partly because we need to do it so often.

2. In almost every situation where you’re in a group, you will need a skilled leader. All groups need leaders and all successful groups have good leaders. Groups without leaders or with weak leaders almost always break down. Members of a leaderless group often begin to feel dissatisfied and frustrated. Time is wasted and the tasks are not achieved. There are often arguments and tensions between people as there is nobody to keep the goals clear. Some personalities dominate and other disappears. Often group members begin not to come to meetings in order to avoid more disharmony.

3. Some people are natural leaders. The celebrity chef, Antonio Carlucci says, “True leaders a re born and you can spot them in kitchens.” They’re people who combine toughness, fairness and humour. Although a lot of people agree that there are some natural –born leaders, most people now recognize that leadership can also be taught. Our professional and experienced staff can train almost anyone how to be a successful leader. Good leaders don’t make people do things in a bossy, controlling way. You can learn how to involve everyone, encouraging the whole group to work towards a common goal

4. Our training courses use activities and techniques to develop a range of qualities which are necessary to be a good leader. Self-confidence is vital and being able to overcome your own fears about being a leader. Successful leaders also need to be calm and intelligent. They need to be able to work out good strategies and make sound judgments under pressure. Lastly, and probably most importantly, good leaders need to be sensitive, sociable and be able to get on with a wide range of people. Good leadership is essentially the ability to influence others and good leaders allow all members of the group to contribute.

The coast of the State of Maine is oneof the most irregular in the world. A straight line running from thesouthernmost coastal city to the northernmost coastal city would measure about225 miles. If you followed the coastline between these points, you would travelmore than ten times as far. This irregularity is the result of what is called adrowned coastline.

I Know Just How Yon Feel

Do you feel sad? Happy? Angry? You maythink that the way you show these emotions is unique.Well, think again.Even the expression of the most personal feelings can beclassified, according to Mind Reading,a DVD displaying every possible human emotion. It demonstrates 412 distinct ways in which we feel:the first visual dictionary of the human heart.Attempts to classify expressions began in the mid-1800s,when Darwin divided the emotions into six types-anger,fear,sadness,disgust,surprise andenjoyment.(46)______Every otherfeeling was thought to derive from Darwin&39;s small group.More complex expressions of emotion were probably learned andtherefore more specific to each culture. But now it is believed that many more facial expressions areshared worldwide.(47)______The Mind ReadingDVD is a systematic visual record of these expressions.

The project was conceived by aCambridge professor as an aid for people with autism(孤独症),who have difficulty bothreading and expressing emotions. But it quicklybecame apparent that it had broader uses.Actors and teachers, for example, need to understand a wide range of expressions. The professor and his research team first had to definean“emotion”.(48)______Using thisdefinition,1,512 emotion terms were identified and discussed. This list was eventually reduced to 412,from“afraid”to“wanting”.

Once these emotions were defined andclassified,a DVD seemed the clearestand most efficient way to display them.In Mind Reading, each expressionis acted out by six different actors in three seconds.(49)______The explanation for this is simple:we may find it difficult to describe emotions using words, but we instantly recognise one when we see it on someone&39;s face.“It was really clear when the actors had got it right,”says Cathy Collis, who directedthe DVD.“Although they were givensome direction,”says Ms Collis,“the actors were not told which facial muscles they should move.(50)______”For example, when someone feels contempt, you can&39;t say for certain that their eyebrows always go down.

Someone who has tried to establishsuch rules is the American,Professor PaulEkman, who has built a database of how the face moves for every emotion. The face can make 43 distinct muscle movements called “actionunits”.These can be combined intomore than 10,000 visible facial shapes.Ekman has written out a pattern of facial muscular movements torepresent each emotion.

Waste Not,Want Not

1.Bob and Clara Darlington, who own and run a farm in the North of England, have always looked for new ways of making money out of the produce they grow.Their success began when they established a shop on their farm,so that people could come and buy fresh vegetables directly from them.

4.Clara admits that starting the business was expensive, and she has worked very hard, but maintains that if the product is good, the public recognize this and buy it.“I aim to offer the highest quality to our customers, whether they come in for a loaf of bread,or take a whole dinner-party menu.I take it as a compliment(恭维) if people take home one of my dishes to serve to their family and friends and get away with pretending they made it themselves.”

5.So it was that the couple realized that they had a surplus of misshapen or damaged vegetables grown on the farm which were unsuitable for selling in the shop.Clara, not wishing to see them get thrown away, decided to turn them into soup.

6.The soup met with the immediate approval of customers to the shop and Clara now produces ten different varieties. She spent much of the summer traveling up and down to London by rail, doing presentations of the soups. As a result, they are now served in first-class railway restaurant cars belonging to three companies as well as being stocked by a number of high-class London stores.
