Having established the (social) nature of man and the consequent necessity for social existence, Adams proceeded to analyze the nature of society. All men have one common nature and from that may be inferred equal rights and duties. "But equal ranks and equal property can never be inferred from it, any more than equal understanding, agility, vigor or beauty. Equal laws are all that ever can be derived from human equality." In every state God has implanted inequalities which no legislator can erase. No two objects are perfectly alike; no two creatures are perfectly equal. "The people in all nations are naturally divided into two sorts, the gentlemen and the simplemen, a word which is here chosen to signify the common people." The factors which cause this division of society are essentially threefold-inequality of wealth, inequality of birth, and inequality of merit. By virtue of these factors are the few separated from the many, the natural aristocracy from the common people. The basis of a natural aristocracy rests upon the possession of influence. "By aristocracy, I understand all those men who can command, influence or procure more than an average of votes; by an aristocrat, every man who can and will influence one man to vote besides himself."

Grooming and personal hygiene have been around for ages. It’s hard to imagine a time when people weren’t concerned with taking care of their appearance and their bodies. Perhaps these practices started when Adam first took a bath and combed his hair before going on a date with Eve. Or maybe they began when Eve put on some herbal makeup to make herself more beautiful. No matter where they started, grooming and personal hygiene have become an important part of everyone’s daily routine.
You might think that all modem societies would have the same grooming and personal hygiene practices. After all, doesn’t everybody take baths? Most people do recognize the need for hygiene, which is the basis for cleanliness and 'health—and a good way to keep one’s friends. Grooming practices include all the little things people do to make themselves look their best, such as combing their hair and putting on makeup. However, while most modern people agree that these things are important, people in different cultures take care of themselves in different ways.

Love can tolerate imperfection. In a love relationship there are times of boredom, times when I may feel like giving up, times of real strain, and times I experience an impasse. Authentic love does not imply enduring happiness. I can stay during rough times, however, because I can re member what we had together in the past, and I can picture what we will have together in our future if we care enough to face our problems and work them through. We agree with reverend Maier when he writes that love is a spirit that changes life. Love is creative and that transforms. However, Maier does not view love as being reserved for a perfect world. "Love is meant for our imperfect world where things go wrong. Love is meant to be a spirit that works in painful situations. Love is meant to bring meaning into life where nonsense appears to reign." In other words, love comes into an imperfect world to make it livable.

We have scrutinized the American dream of achieved wealth and well-being by comparing rich and unrich countries, and rich and unrich people. That leaves the final question: Over time, does happiness rise with affluence?
Typically not. Lottery winners appear to gain but a temporary jolt of joy from their winnings. Looking back, they feel delighted to have won. Yet the euphoria doesn't last. In fact, previously enjoyed activities such as reading may become less pleasurable. Compared to the high of winning a million dollars, ordinary pleasure looks pale.
On a smaller scale, a jump in our income can boost our morale, for a while. "But in the long run," notes Inglehart, "neither an ice cream cone nor a new car nor becoming rich and famous produces the same feelings of delight that it initially did... Happiness is not the result of being rich, but a temporary consequence of having recently become richer."
