uters. Computers are being used more and more extensively for the simple reason that they are far more efficient than human beings. They have much better memories and can store huge amounts of information. They can collect and analyze enormous numbers of facts very quickly. This makes them suitable for all kinds of work. They can pay wages, reserve seats on planes, control machines in factories. They can even play chess, write poetry, or compose music. But perhaps the most interesting applications will be for personal use. In some countries, modified television sets have been connected by telephone to a very large computer. Users dial a few numbers on the telephone to get information from the large computer such as schedules for airplanes, information from dictionaries, or weather forecasts. They can also use the computer to do complicated calculations and to play games.

听力原文: The Credit Card in the U. S.

Today, more and more people in the U. S. are using credit cards instead of money to buy what they need. Almost anyone who bas a steady income and a continuous work record can apply for a credit card.

With a credit card, you can buy a car, eat a dinner, take a trip, and even get a haircut by charging the cost to your account. In this way, you can pay for purchases a month or two later. Or you may choose to spread out your payments over several months and pay only part of the total amount each month.. With a credit card , you don’t have to carry much cash and you don’t have to be concerned about losing your money through carelessness or theft. The card user only has to worry about paying the final bill. This of course can be a problem if you charge more than you can pay for.

Scientists do not know exactly why red tides happen./But they say a combination of conditions all play apart./These include water temperature, nutrients in the water and water flow./Pollution could also play a part/

听力原文: The Medicine Man

Among the Indians of North American the medicine man was a very important person. He could cure illness and he could speak to the spirits. The spirits are the supernatural forces that controlled the world.

The Indians believed that bad spirits made people ill. So, when people were ill, the medicine man tried to help them by using magic. He speaks to the good spirits and asked for their help.

The medicine men were often successful for another reason, too. They knew about plants that really can cure illnesses. A lot of modem medicines are made from plants that were used by medicine men hundreds of years ago.

sound. In one second, light travels about 300,000 km, but sound travels only 0. 334 kin. You can get some idea of this difference by watching the start of a race. If you stand some distance away from the starter, you can see smoke come from the referee’s gun before the sound reaches your ears.

This great speed of light produces some strange facts. Sunlight takes about 8 minutes to reach us. If you look at the light of the moon tonight, remember that the light rays left the moon 1.3 seconds before they reach you. The nearest star is so far away that the light which you can see from it tonight started to travel towards you four years ago. The light from some of tonight’s stars may have started on its journey to you before you were born.
